The British, in India, and in Africa (if I'm not mistaken) made much use of exploiting local rivalries, playing off one group against another, etc. during their time as an Empire. Troops were required, but surely many fewer than if they had not used that tactic. Maintaining local control of an area is much easier if the different segments of a population hate each other more than they hate you...

In the Alpha Quadrant, this can be used to great effect, I think someone earlier in this list touched on it. Example - even after the Dominion War when Cardassia was in ruins, what true Bajoran would pass up the chance to go to Cardassia and help the Empire "occupy" Cardassia Prime?

Or, as Mark S, or was it Stavro ? in his ongoing fanfiction, an Imperial Fleet was dumped into the Alpha Quadrant and with Lord Nemesis at the helm, conquered the Romulans and turned them effectively into local levies to be used against the other Alpha Quadrant powers (or at least the Feddies and Klingons so far)...

That may have been me you were thinking of for an alternate strategy.

Basically, attack one of the political empires with no friends; it creates a power vacume for you to move into and no one will lift a finger to help them. You might even get "assistance" from the other powers agoinst your targets outlying holdings. After the conquest is complete, consolodate and move on.

Prime targets in my mind would be the Romulans and Cardassians. Infiltrate the Feds with agents and trade like hell with the Ferengi. They will sell almost anything. Almost...

You will have to watch for infiltration by the Feds, however.

Ah. Ok.

Iron Fist, A Lancer opens up on Rouge and Wraith before they are in torp range which is quite a large range
You can't be any more specific? Iron fist is several hundred pages long.. a page number or a specific incident would help more. I'm not even sure there WERE lancers operating in "Iron Fist".. I didnt see any, but I'll check again.

BTW how can you be certain they were out of torpedo range? What example of "torpedo range" are you using to justify the hundreds/thousansd of km you are claiming? (yes again I'm asking for more proof)
To be sure thats the only time I can think off the top of my head thus a quandry, Stackpole says 2KM Ranges only(Why build a ship that can only shoot 2 KM away you got me) but AA counters in one book and accepts it in the next meaning we have a EU issue at odds..
Not really. To my knowledge the only concrete examples of "longer than 2km range" Allston devised are all "NJO" in nature.. a different opponent than the empire. Different rules. Against the Empire (whose technological/EW/targeitng capabilities are closer to that of the NR/Rebels) visual range was more common.

the "2km" range issue was more prevalent among all nine "rogue squadron" novels, about each half and half written by STackpole and Allston both (allston wrote four, Stackpole wrote 5). Both Allston's first and second books (Wraith Squadron and Iron Fist) made mention of the 2km range. If anything, its an artifact of the requirement to get into visual range before being able to target (and the non-use of targeting computers.)
If we where idioits(Ala Darkstar I have not mocked on him in awhile so I shall now) we would assume the Higher number, not only that but add a Zero so it IS 50,000 KM range, But since we are both hopefuly not, I'll conceded the point due to lack of evidance for my position
Fine. But you should be more careful about what you claim, and back it up with more proof in the future.

Thusly while I conceded the point I was mistaken on the issue so droped the matter as my position was not defenabled

This force I was looking at dropping in would be one fleet, one time, from the forces of an Imperial warlord. So, no hope for any reinforcement down the line... aside from what they start with, everything else has to be built in the alpha quadrant (hence giving them a mobile shipyard.) I had also planned to toss in construction facilities for droids, and give them the capability to build Dark Troopers. That should help with the requirements for troops.

I'm liking the idea of starting with the Romulans. It's got several things going for it: the Romulans have few allies, so a war with them is unlikely to draw other powers in. They're highly insular, so news of your invasion is unlikely to reach beyond their borders until it's far too late for any assistance to save them. Plus, the Romulans have this belief that they're destined to rule the galaxy, and asking outsiders for help would be a concession of weakness... I can't picture them ever doing it, not until they're already on the ropes. There's also the fringe benefit of them drawing their conclusions about Imperials from humanity as it is in the Federation: they won't know what sort of pain is awaiting them...

One problem I see for the Empire in that case: crystal gravfield traps aren't common, even at the height of the Empire. I can't see a fleet coming through with one because they're mainly used as a defense against cloaked ships around planets. I could hedge and put one in there, but cloaked ships will still be a nuisance: any ideas on how to deal with that?

6 World Devestators, well, given sufficient lead time, 1 would do the trick

stage 1- scout local( AQ) space with stealthed probots
stage 2- destroy subspace comm relays, antimatter plants, shipyards and orbital stations with probot-bombs ( hyperdrive motivator and a whopping big bomb[Hi Mike!]) and droid fighters/gunships
stage 3- land probots with 5Mt self destructs to demand surrender or boom
stage 4- occupy with droid armies

And that's assuming you keep the WDs out of action. Given that they held off a Rebel Fleet at Mon Calamari, I'd say they could do the trick against SF. But I'd rather keep them back and let the droids do the dirty work.

um... I think that's all. Still not as many ships as the Alpha quad powers have.
Seems to look good to me. this sized fleet would allow thw Imps to maintain a standing fleet at most heavilly populated alpha quad planets and still be able to respond to any insergence as well.

That was disapointing ..Should we show this Federation how to build a ship so we may have worthy foes? Typhonis 1
