Computing speed

Post by Enola Straight »

In ST, computer impulses are sent down optical circuits at FTL speeds due to the photons being boosted with miniature warp drive boosters in the curcuits.

Does something similar happen in SW computer circuits?

I see many problems with this the biggest one isn't a warp field suppost to be lethal? If so than just standing next to said computer would kill you. also if warp power is ever lost, then the computer will no longer function properly. This of course may explain why the emergency computer system on Star Trek never work right when they need them to....

According to the tech manual a ships computer core is encased in a subspace field to let it run at FTL speeds. I can recall no mention of any form of warp boosters nor can I see how that would work. Anyway its not canon.

to answer the topic question, no, I haven't heard of such a thing. But I remember a quote from the ANH novelization talking about hours of data being stored on the little disk in R2-D2, and considering it had all the deck plans, some charts/diagrams (of what, I have no clue) that should give you some ideas of speed...

very fast?

Also the fact that droids are capable of developing personalities if they don't get regular memory wipes kinda shows there must me one hell of a lot of storage capacity in those buckets

That's rich. The E-D's main computer takes hours to perform a simple historical database text search and they're claiming that their computers are so fast that lightspeed conductor transmission isn't good enough for them?

That might just be an indication of how incredibly bad there interface and operating system area, Windows 24K might be sucking up 99% of the processing capacity to keep its calendar running.

Well, the whole thing about ST-computers smells like total BS.
For a computer to calculate the best route for a ship at 40 millions c, there is a lot of computer power needed, and it' a lot of data, so thier computers must have a extremly high and fast data-rate, clearly superior. And remember, the Falcon was already a old, cheap ship, that in mind try to imagine the computer power of a star destroyer or even the Death Star.....

Which, even if true, would only allow for super-fast processing in the core. Data transmission to the rest of the ship would be limited to lightspeed, and have to rely on some other method to boost the bandwidth enough, or they'd have the previously mentioned issue of warp fields being too close to crewmen (like, say, someone hovering over the stations on the bridge).

why would signals being sent down at FTL speeds increasing computing speed?

More calculations per second.

I used a similar concept in my story universe. Once they hit the end of Moores law, and the limits of optical and quantum computing, they began using devices that can alter the value of C in a given region. So they encased the optical computers in the device so that the thing ran faster. It's a good diea if you can do it, but I don't know think theres any evidence in Trek to support the idea that they do this. All evidence points to organize DNA computers.
