And the use of the term "laser" in Star Wars (Han: "That wasn't a laser blast, something hit us!") is of course a holdover slang term from the glory days when energy weapons were first introduced and the concept of "laser" mant new, fascinating things that could destroy stuff.
Of course, today, we have these things--
the term "phone" came originally from "gramaphone", the funky wax cylinders that were played on crank-powered (clockwork) players with the big bell-horns that were used to project sound. The term got adapted to tele-phone later as anothert type of sound projector.
And let us not forget the "RECORD industry", where artists RE-CORD a new "album" for public consumption.
Then there is "gun", originally "gonne" in the Old English and originally meant to be any sort of cannon or artillery piece but eventually got to be the standard nickname for any firearm, no matter how small.
The unknowing should remember that the more accurate (if vague) term for an energy weapon in the Star Wars universe is actually a "blaster", which denotes properties utterly unlike any L.A.S.E.R. that could be built.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

You have to remember that the FTL technology is different in SW than in ST my friend. The SW FTL drive was probably designed like that. So their 0.5 past light speed might be Transwarp/Nearly Warp 10 velocity in ST terms. When Tom paris flew the shuttle that made warp 10, the stars went faster and faster, and it looked, surprisingly, like hyperdrive.
Maybe some hyperdrive variant.
It's possible to assume that the SW galaxy did not have warp drive before Hyperdrive. They could have just invented hyperdrive and not discovered dilithium or something.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Heh.
Ever heard the lyrics to that Song from Three Penny Opera.
"You can knock them on their heads, until they are quite dead, doesn't matter how hard you knock, you'll never knock hard enough.

Unless I've heard something different HDS has always agreed with the "invisible" part of the ICS quote which means that the invisible lightspeed beam AIN'T a laser. Sure it is an EM wave of some sort but since it is invisible it can't be a laser which occurs only in the visible spectrum.TheDarkling wrote:You hear that HDS????

In other words there IS an invisible portion but it is NOT a laser. As to division of energy between lightspeed beam and tracer there is no evidence to support any conclusion.

I said.
The only diff is that its an em wave not in the visable spectrum apart from that its exactly the same as a laser at least for intent of speed/range etc.
Moo said.IG-88E: Some warsies believe TL's are some sort of energy beam that travels at c (basically a laser) while all intelligent pro trek think other wise.
However HDS buys that an invisable energy beam moving at C does the damage and the other part is simple waste glow or at least thats what he said on the thread that caused he storm out of sb because everyone disagreed with him.Edit: All intelligent people think otherwise.

Darkling? I suggest you think long and hard about that if you think GRASERs, XASERS, and so forth are the same as LASERs. And yes, I used caps because they are acronyms, not true words(Though in Wars they are a true word..).
As for dismissing it as fanciful(Especially on such ridiculous terms as 'SB mocked him'), I suggest you read up on the evidence for it.

I was actually in on the debate and read it in its entirity and as you can see here the great majority say that they arent Laser because we see them and they dont move at C - I agree with both but using the FX fubs to says that the invisable portion moves at C and does the damage seems way off to me based on what I have seen.
Going by the poll on the other thread I think most people believe that its the bolt that does the damage and I agree, also I didnt use SB mocked him as my reasoning - I dont fall for that although it is common in many places that I could name.

So really, what we are pretty much coming to is not "could the Federation win a head-to-head crunch-off with the Empire?" or "Does the Federation stand a chance?" but really the question that even the most devoted, intelligent Trekkie has to ask is, "How much would the Federation be able to save/resist before being devoured by the Empire?" Or, "Oh, come on, we wouldn't lose THAT badly!"
But let's face it, the Trek universe is soft and lazy from centuries of cushy, convenience-at-fingertip living. Once the Empire took over, and folks found that life under the Coruscant thumb really wasn't so harsh, would they REALLY rise up and engage in guerrilla resistance? I doubt it. Imperial occupation was fairly light, Han Solo and numerous others walk around openly carrying weapons, Jabba (known gangster) is able to ambulate about with henchmen and no hinderance from stormtroopers... The Empire only gets heavy handed when resistance and rebellion crop up. The Trek people would catch on to this quickly and adopt easily to their new masters-- 'peace at any cost'. The handful of ballsy types are already in the Maquis, but they would be a joke for the Empire.
Probably, in reality, there woiuld be no battle! All these combat scenarios are for naught! The Federation would probably just let themselves be incorporated into the Empire in the interests of peace... and the hawks in StarFleet would see the power to beat the Borg and Romulans into submission in a weekend.
