Naboo Starfighter?

Post by Dalton »

I remember a page somewhere (Brown's maybe?) detailing the ridiculousness of the design of the Naboo Starfighter in that the R2 unit couldn't actually fit as it was into the starfighter.

Clues?

This cross section shows the R2 unit nestled in the starfighter with it's dome extended through the nacelle (?). I suppose that's one way to retcon it.

It was Brown's. His problem with the ICS retcon was that R2 shouldn't physically be able to compress his legs like that, since they should be filled with stuff he needs to move. He has a point, but we gotta make lemondade outta these lemons we done been given, and accept the ICS solution.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Maybe it's just because I can't see the drawing all that well, but it doesn't look like his legs compressed in there. Nor did I remember seeing that in the movie.

Personally, I think Brown's site was bitching at anything and everything at that point (around TPM) so far as I could tell, no matter how small. Like the Jedi Robes thing and all. But that's just me.

Yeah. But I can see his point on that one. Especially in light of the really cool ideas they had instead of the "desert" robes look.

If you look the head pokes out, but the body is really below it. And the access shaft tapers so that it gets smaller until only the head is able to fit. So if the droid moves and more up from the bottom, its legs will hit the sides.

Why didn't they just have the R-2 unit enter facing sideways? I mean, I know R2 came in facing foreward in the movie, but wouldn't it have been easy enough to have him sideways?

Looking at the picture, I don't think that would fix it.

if you look at the picture all of the stuff that would be in the r2 is pulled out, so maybe that lets the legs go in

Why not? It would certainly be a close call between the dome and the cockpit glass, but I think it would fit. It definately would on the aft side.

Maybe it's just the picture, but it seems to me the shaft is still too narrow.

If the idiots would have increased the size of the damn thing just slightly, it would have worked fine. It seems that with the prequels, we only get micro fighters. The Naboo and the Jedi starfighter, while decent enough designes, are way too small for what the want them to be. IMHO.

Of course the N-1 WAS a Cerimonial Fighter rather then a well designed combat unit. The fact that a R2-unit barely fits is just more proof of that.

You know, the problem is that not the R2 unit can barely fit. It can't fit into the physical dimensions at all.

That's why the ICS has R2 dome extended on a stick and shafted on the top of the fighter.

And that's extremely FU.

I mean, all Doug Chiang had to do was create a fighter design with enough space in the tail where the R2 dome could fit and this entire problem wouldn't have cropped up in the first place.

I would speculate that the requirement of fitting a R2 into those fighters might have been a last-minute decision.
