New School Dress Code
Just saw this one on the local TV news. A local highschool has put in a dress code for female students that goes something like this:
- No cleavage
- No short shorts or skirts
- No exposed underwear
- No exposed midriffs (shirts & tops must come down to the pants)
There were a couple other points but I didn't catch them. Violators would be sent home. They also did some interviews with parents, students, and the school principal. The pricipal was all for it since it was her idea, she went on about public decency and how it would cut down on classroom distractions and some other stuff, and the parent had the same viewpoint in her interview. One student was indifferent since it wouldn't affect her anyways, and another one wasn't too happy about it.
Personally I'm thinking WTF is this shit? While teenage girls probably shouldn't be wearing G-strings & bikinis in school, this is going a bit too far. So how exactly are they going to decide if shorts or skirts are too short? What if some girl leans over a desk and unknowingly shows some cleavage? And what the hell is this no exposed midriffs thing? I can understand not wanting girls running around looking like total sluts (Britney Spears anyone?) but this is going a bit too far. No cleavage? What the hell?

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

Lots of people bitched at my school. Interestingly, short skirts and dresses tended to be more tolerated than shorts.Ryoga wrote:Yeah, I can attest to that. At my high school that was the rule for a long time, and nobody bitched about it. What the fuck? Hell, the hottest girls were also some of the most-dressed.
It gets damned hot in Florida - girls want to wear shorts and have exposed shoulders and whatnot. Good girls, bad girls, no-one wants to be cooking when they go outside to change classes.

I finished highschool in '98 and we had no dress codes at all. We had girls who showed cleavage (quite a few actually), had tight tops with their breasts printing through them, girls exposing midriffs, underwear, and wearing shorts that were quite short. Yes a couple of them looked like Britney Spears clones, but the rest of them looked damn attractive without the slutty overtones. Nothing wrong with looking good I say.

Amusingly, my middle (i.e. junior high) school had fewer restrictions on short length than my high school.aerius wrote:I finished highschool in '98 and we had no dress codes at all. Well, it's a good thing I didn't have to deal with these pesky dress codes in school. I don't dress all that provocatively at all but I've still broken all those rules except the exposed underwear one. It does get pretty warm & humid here so chicks like me would have to wear short shorts and tanktops. The other thing is I'm a pretty good looking babe and I don't mind showing off my body a bit every now & then, which means I'll be showing a bit of cleavage or baring my nicely toned abs. And if girls want to dress slutty then so be it, it just reflects on their fashion tastes and sense of self image. They'll just have have to deal with whatever issues dressing like that may cause.

I'm not sure why people choose 'To Love is to Bury' as their wedding song...It's about a murder-suicide

How very odd, are these kind of rules very common in the States?
I do seem to remember that there was some talk of inapropriate clothing when I was in highschool... IIRC this one girl started using a see through T-shirt (some kind of lace I think it was), also she didn't wear a bra underneath... Someone complained about it and there was some talk, but nothing ever came of it.

Anyway, this is the USA: the home of the soccer moms. What one parent reacts to they will overreact by a factor of a hundred.

But if lots of people are dressing that way and people see each other like that that often, I can imagine that they'd get a bit used to it and not get a hard on each time they see the opposite gender.Montcalm wrote:And teen boys grade will get lower while something else will get higher.Shinova wrote:Additionally, the trend toward skimpier clothing is inevitable. I think it's up to the school and the parents that have kids there what they want to do.Sir Sirius wrote:How very odd, are these kind of rules very common in the States?

It isn't that common, but it does happen every so often.

I doubt that...we have that junk in Florida, and it was, for the most part, followed. There was some cleavage and the like, but not anyone falling out of anything (it was against the rules, but they hardly ever did anything about it...thankfully).Shinova wrote:Oh, Ms. High School Principal, so you don't mind parents suing you and your school once their daughters undergo heat exhaustion? Fine with me.
It's not like you have all that far to go outside in high school anyway, unless you have PE or a sport after school (but then dress codes are somewhat different then, IIRC). And with the magic of A/C, assuming it works well enough (an iffy proposition in my old HS during Freshman/Sophomore year), you can't really use the "too hot outside" excuse all too much.
At least on campus. If you drop dead from heat stroke walking home from school, that's your problem.

Haha I'm away from that problem now. At ASU, literally about 75% of the girls are hot and I've seen about a dozen in jeans. Everyone else is wearing tiny tank tops (or just a swimming suit top) and shorts or skirts about 8" tall.
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.

I'm just remembering our very good and propper high school Social Science teacher, who looked at the Dress code revisions and announced that SHE couldn't even pass them, as the slit in her ankle length dress was too long.
then again we had a TA who put the T&A into Teachers ASSistant....

If those rules would be introduced at the school I went to, a great deal of the female students in 8th-9th grade would have a lot of clothing now practically useless for everyday usage...

The Air Force doesn't have a female variant uniform with a skirt, or is it just because of the kind of work you are doing?Wicked Pilot wrote:Suck it up people. Where I work all the women are required to wear long pants.
