Could someone please explain to me why everyone's drooling over a 2-D map whose graphic content is limited to some glow-dots connected by straight lines on a space background?

The same reason people drool over the huge two dimensional paintings guiding the Sistine Chapel. Investment of time and effort.

That, and it just looks pretty.

Fuzzy; your map is outstanding in detail, I just have two questions.

First, what is the scale of the map? Is it showing half of the Galaxy, one quater an arm?

Second, where did you get the references for the stars? Some (Sol) are obvious, but I don't recall many of the shown Empires actually stated on the show.

Good work though, regardless.

Hey, it's OK to be impressed by an investment of time and effort, but some of the people in this thread are actually drooling over its appearance, which is rather ridiculous.

Nice map, but it seems to indicate a very small scale, the area would only cover a very small portion of our galaxy, namely the environs immediately around Earth. You can get some idea of distance from the fact that Vega is located some 800 light years from Earth, and in that map, it's nearly halfway across. This makes the are depicted vanishingly small when you compare to the whole of the galaxy.

Thats a really good map op the B5 universe.

Also, it shows the correct scale of the empires of B5. That corrects the totally crazy assumption of some rabid Fivers, that B5 spans the entire galaxy......

Ok, all of you people close your mouths. His map is not "extremely good detail" or "really good", its an edit of a map he didn't even make. It's about 5 minutes worth of Photoshop work and it doesn't have anything particularly challenging at all. Good gods, you're all hypnotized by the pretty colors, stop acting like children attracted to anything brightly coloured.

If you want detailed maps go find some really obsessive scifi writers notebooks.

Kojikun, are you alleging plagarism? Becuase if you are I'd appreciate seeing the facts.

And it's not detailed. But that thing must have taken a while to do and it's a really nice design. It's a very nice peice of work.

I spent about 4 days on this map. Maybe 20 hours in Photoshop, plus a week or so of research (watching episodes and running searches) before I started. Like I said, I had no life at the time.

Yes it is only a portion of the galaxy, becuase the B5 races only inhabit a portion of the galaxy. This was said many times. :p

Here is the official B5 Wars map it was loosly based off of.

I think it's gaudy and inaccurate, not to mention that all the systems fit into a perfect square

Also, it's not print quality and I wanted one I could print out to be 3'x5' for a Babylon 5 Wars compaign.

No, gaudy is lots of symbols and fades and bright glows and shit. Their map is functional and clean. It's also clearly not meant to represent actual borders but relative shapes/size and position.
Also, it's not print quality and I wanted one I could print out to be 3'x5' for a Babylon 5 Wars compaign.
Point being? You could have made a map like theirs only larger. Yeah, they have some bad design elements, like the over-the-tope images representing things like homeworlds, but thats not a huge design flaw.

Each his own is fine. But the people here are worshipping you for very little.I have expressed my dislike of this silliness. People come in here and worship you instead of giving proper praise to the people in AnP who have made some pretty nice pieces of art. It pisses me off.

Firstly, have I claimed to have made breath taking or phenomenal work? No. Honestly, I think my work is shit. But thats just me. If you want, tho, I can do something for you. How about I make a digital painting and show you? I was working on one earlier in my graphic design class, I can restart it here.

Not they're not. They are just being silly. Remember that every response in the internet is a bit exagerated, escpecially on a message board. I'd be very surprised if any of them gave it any consideration at all after moving on to the next thread.

Thats what people do. Go to the Art forum here or at SB sometime. 90% of the responses make the poster out to be the second coming, even if his work is only 'fair' by industry standards. It's just a way of showing appreciation. When you are limited to text to convey dialague saying 'Thats nice' comes off insincere. You have to put more emphasis behind it to convey appreciation.
kojikun wrote:I have expressed my dislike of this silliness. People come in here and worship you instead of giving proper praise to the people in AnP who have made some pretty nice pieces of art. It pisses me off.
And I'm sure that if the people at AnP (what is AnP?) were to post here they would get a similar response, most likely even more exaulting.
kojikun wrote:Firstly, have I claimed to have made breath taking or phenomenal work? No. Honestly, I think my work is shit.
Then you're standards are too high. Not everyone is a Michelangelo or Picasso. You need to have appreciation for what you CAN do.
kojikun wrote:If you want, tho, I can do something for you. How about I make a digital painting and show you? I was working on one earlier in my graphic design class, I can restart it here.
Feel free. Post it in the Art forum. I promise to CONSTRUCTIVLY critisize it, and give you pointers or advice wherever I fell I can help. My area of expertise is Maya, but I'll offer help wherever I can.

As I said in the inital post, I don't really look at this as an art piece, it's referance material, and that's where the work went, into making it as accurate as possible. At the some time, I didn't want it to look TOO ugly :P

That pretty much sums it up right there. Vocal timbre and tonals don't transmit well across text, so...
