Many of the schools here in Tucson have adopted school uniforms. Basically it's a white shirt with navy pants, shorts, or a skirt. I'm sure there are length requirements on both.

Most of the students do look rather warm when classes get out but considering that one of the primary reasons for the dress codes was to interfere with gang banging and wannabees who dressed liked them. It was sold as a anti-weapons issue but it was also pointed out that it would help kids focus on school by inherently making them more equal. Plus, there would be less attention to fashion, although the dress codes do allow some accessorizing.

IIRC one of the school districts banned backpacks this year. Supposedely it was because too many kids were carrying these huge loads around that were causing them physical harm. I think it really had to do, once again, with weapons. Can't hide them in your clothes anymore so why not stick them in you backpack?

The only things I remember when I was in school is a girl being told her shorts were too short. Basically parts of her ass cheeks were showing at the bottom.

There was one guy who had to change his t-shirt because it said "Hey Russia, why don't you go play with yourself". It had a picture of a Teddy Bear with a red star on it. I think this one just bothered one teacher in particular.

I used to wear a University of South Carolina (the Gamecocks) shirt in the same school. On the sleave it said "go cocks" and none of the teachers ever said a thing to me.

I also had a t-shirt with a big mushroom cloud with a bunch of dead Izod alligators in it. It said "Nuke the Preppies". Today, I'm sure someone would take offense because it's adovocating violence (nuking in particular) and it's not PC.

One thing that I'm sure many of the people who've recently been in school might find amusing is that in all of the schools I went to growing up we were not allowed to wear a hat indoors. You could wear it inside until you got to your locker then it came off and stayed in your locker. Certainly no one wore one in class.

No one really said much about people carrying pocket knives in my junior high. It wasn't exactly smiled apon but as long as you weren't doing anything stupid with it (like threatening people) the administration left you alone.

OK, my 6th form dress code:

Smart, office-appropriate clothng:

No denim
No midriffs
No strappy tops
Compulsory jacket

In the grammar school my sister went to, all the boys had to wear suits and ties.

In the grammar school my male friends went to, that tie had to be the school tie.

So stop complaining. We didn't.

I went to a private school with uniforms. We never got too hot, nor did our sister schools- and this is Australian summer I'm talking about- while you may not like it, citing the heat as a reason for walking around school looking like you're going for a walk on the beach in high summer sounds like a pretty bogus reason to me.

Ditto. We here in Florida don't have any problems with it. Even the people who wear the heavy black shit all the time aren't dropping like flies in the halls.

And Tsyroc, about the hats: we don't get to wear 'em in my old HS. They're banned outright. Probably for some gang reason, or the other reason that assholes tend to snatch them, causing fights.

Though my 11th grade history teacher said we should be allowed to wear them, if only to enforce a "no hats indoors" type of behaivor. Now in college wear everyone is wearing the hats indoors, I think it looks sloppy as Hell.

Look. Boys continually under perform in school, no doubt because half our brains are in our pants. But by the time Uni rolls in, we've matured a bit, and can handle the diversions a lot better. I'm all for this uniform policy.

I had to wear a uniform during my jr/sr years. Nothing wrong with that. However, we didn't have to wear ties. Ties are, imo, overkill.

I've been in private school since 2nd grade. I've had to wear uniforms, and, once a week, wear a blazer and a tie. We didn't complain, I don't see why these people would...

We don't have uniforms, and with a public school its doubtful we ever will. We do have a dress code though, Skirts and shorts have to end under the fingers, with your hands at your sides (A friend of mine was complaining that she has long arms so that's unfair.) Shirts must have straps, at least one inch wide. And no bandanas, for some reason they're worried about gangs...in one of the safest towns in America.*shrug*

You will. My neighbor goes to Sandpiper Shores (a public school), and you have to wear uniforms. I even went out buying them with that family for some whack reason

I won't, because I'm a senior. And I'm also the last year that's getting two weeks for spring break. The little morons at Albany had another "ingenious idea"

You will be expected to meet dress codes in your working life until you die. One thing school is for is to prepare you for the real world, at least that's the theory. As long as the dress code is reasonable, my middle school banned shorts which was pretty stupid in the summer, I see no reason to complain. Id bet you most high school, middle school types will complain simply cause someone is telling them what to do. Looking back I think that was my main opposition to any suggestions of uniforms.

Personally I'm thinking WTF is this shit? While teenage girls probably shouldn't be wearing G-strings & bikinis in school, this is going a bit too far. So how exactly are they going to decide if shorts or skirts are too short?
Hmm, tape measure? :)

And what the hell is this no exposed midriffs thing? I can understand not wanting girls running around looking like total sluts (Britney Spears anyone?) but this is going a bit too far. No cleavage? What the hell?
No half shirts where the stomach was exposed was a rule at my high school too.

This is human psychology at work. If you're accustomed to no dress code, then it will seem outrageous. If you are accustomed to a dress code, it will seem perfectly reasonable.

I'm actually in support of dress codes and to go one step further, school uniforms. Clothing is just one more way that people form cliques and differentiate themselves socially in school, and we have more than enough problems with that bullshit.

Clothing is not just about comfort or even style; it's all too often a way of declaring allegiance to a social group or strata. Look at the idiots who waddle around in baggy pants hanging down to their knees; they are trying to tell everyone that they belong to the "cool boyz in the hood" crowd.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.
But now, you shall witnesss ... its dismemberment!

What I remember of my highschool dress code (for the males, I don't remember females)

No professional Sports Teams logos on any clothing
No college Sports Teams logos on any clothing
No ripped clothing
no frayed clothing
Males could not have visible piercings
Males hair could not go past the ear-lobes
Body art cannot be displayed
no showing of the belly
no chains on wallets
shorts (and skirts) could only go 4 inches above the knee
guys could not wear make-up
no looney toons
no thick souled shoe over an inch
No Doc Martins
No solid colors

I think their were more, but it was harsh, I would have prefered uniforms over all the fucking little rules.

I never could figure it out. I wonder how it got to be so "cool" in the first place...? :?

That's easy. For young people:
  1. defying authority = cool
  2. gangs defy authority, therefore gangs = cool
  3. crime is associated with poverty
  4. gangs are associated with crime
  5. therefore, gang style is associated with the look of poverty
  6. therefore, expensive versions of homeless peoples' clothing makes people think of tough guys from bad neighbourhoods
  7. ergo, fucking stupid "boyz in the hood" look

Pretty much, yes.

"Expensive versions of homeless people's clothes"?

Isn't that a direct contradiction?

Oh well...if my peers want to go around looking like a bunch of gang members, thereby easily reinforcing any stereotypes those in government/law enforcement/adults in general have of all kids being little hoodlums and therefore requiring stricter controls be placed upon them, that's their problem.

I'm 18 now, so fuck it. I don't have any more curfew. :D

Kinda like how Dickies are getting trendy. They used to be cheap, and were targeting the lower income community. Now, little rich kinds want them because they are "cool", and the price skyrocketed.

And of course me and the other 18 year olds reading Restricted materials in class was doubly cool, as we weren't sharing them with the minors, we were just defying authority.

esides when they banned Tom Jones, and Fanny Hill I just HAD to read them...
