I wonder if the reason things like this go on is moderate non-fundie christians see not christianity as the problem, but these people who were nuts and not really "true" christians, that it's these particular people not christianity itself, that they are perversions of it.

Christianity is already a perversion of itself. Compare Jesus' teachings with Paul's teachings and you will see what I mean.

Anyone who follows Paul's teachings is immediately a heretic. He was excommunicated from James' church (the original, actual church founded by Jesus) for being a mysoginistic asshole who was having delusions of being approached by Jesus.
