Felt too self-indulgent. Too much showing off. The only scene I really liked was when Dave was disconneting HAL's higher logic functions.

Basically, the monolith was a sort of gateway to one of the aliens'work stations. The hotel room Bowman appeared in was extracted from images from his mind, and his rapid aging and death was the aliens' remaking him into the Star Child. For what purpose, I am not really sure.

Now you have to watch 2010. Arthur C. Clarke loved the movie, which you don't really hear from authors that mch.

The last half hour where he's flying through the wormhole, is IMO to make him look like a protohuman. every couple of minutes you see his face in incredible terror and horror, practically try to get out of his space suit.

I like how in every show about space, they'll make some reference to 2001. In Futurama the love song that bender say when he was dating the ship was Daisy.

A lot of criticism is leveled at the length of the liner docking at the station sequence. Kubrick felt that editing The Blue Danube was a travesty, and made the scene fit the music.

The "wormhole" scene or whatever it was that Bowman went through was a bit tedious, and bizarre, but the bit in the "hotel room" is one of my favorite movie scenes. I get hungry watching it, those aliens serve some good looking food.

Good for him. I absolutely love that part of the movie. Besides the music, the space plane & station, I like the whole concept of how the spaceport looks and so on. I guess I just like looking at the past's predictions of what the future will look like. Plus, who would want them to shorten The Blue Danube?

2001 for me was a string of cool-looking scenes that lasted far too long to maintain my interest. Like the start with the monolith and proto-humans - it seemed nice and interesting for the first few minutes, but I soon started to wish "Oh PLEASE, get to the goddamned POINT!"

Repeat ad nauseum through the rest of the movie. And I couldn't understand WTH Bowman was saying 3/4 of the time. If it wasn't for the awesome portrayal of space, I would have left before the ending.

In my humble opinion, 2010 was SO much better. I've seen it three times, while trying to watch 2001 again made me go play computer games after 10 minutes.

It *is* a masterpice. Just because there are no bombs, things exploding, funky starship battles, and no chicks showing their secondary sexual characteristic every other scene, doesn't mean its boring.

It only means you can't appreciate it.
Might as well stand in the Sistine Chapel and go "Oh, that's ugly shit up at the wall..."

I do. Space is long and drawn out. I like seeing some proper space physics, none of this zapping around doing 45 degree changes in direction in 5 seconds, but the type where velocities must be matched, and all of that. Finally, classical music is long. Just be glad he picked the Blue Danube not Mahler's 3rd Symphony (2 hours of music in that one) lol.


The only bit I truly didn't like was the whole monolith thing. I'd rather see a sci fi with no aliens at all. Though I don't know of one that exists yet lol.

No explosions, all just routine and boring.

The only space movie I'v truly enjoyed has been Apollo 13. Some of that is a bit hyped too, but at least it's pretty close.

2001 isn't bad, but it's the least good Kubrick movie. One of its problems is that it's disjointed; it connects several interesting scenes in uninteresting manners. Also, the entire ending sequence is stupid. And yes, believe me, I understand it, but I still think it's stupid. In fact, I don't like any of the monolith stuff. Except for the scene where they go down to see the moon excavation; that scene is good if only for the music.

I'll take Barry Lyndon or Dr. Strangelove or A Clockwork Orange over 2001 any day of the week.

I don't fucking see how people can call it artistic and fun to watch 30 minutes of a fucking shuttle docking with a station. I want PLOT, I want it to get to the point. Fuck, I never did see the whole movie through it was so fucking borring.
