College is like that. So far, anyway.

And for those of you who need $100 shoes just to stay together: I have my $60 Magnum boots. Four years and going strong!

First off, boots don't count. And second off, I've gotten shoes at Payless (Feel the cheapness!) that have lasted for a long time that only cost like...$20-$30.

Absolutely. This does not necessarily mean, however, that we shouldn't attempt to minimize the possible distinctions that can be made between students. I'm not speaking in favor of school uniforms; as I said earlier I ride the fence. I'm just pointing out a flaw in your argument.

Anyway, there are good arguments for uniforms that have nothing to do with sex.
Well, I can think of very few arguments for dress codes that apply to only one gender. But perhaps you are right and uniforms are a good idea. I'm skeptical, however, because it seems like a band-aid solution to a much deeper problem. You can't rid schools of classism by making people wear different clothes.

It does, however, blur the differences or at least making them less visible.

Hey, I went to a school where there wasn't any dresscode and I saw more girls in trousers than girls wearing skirts.

When I was at school the girls wore the shortest skirts they could and always had their shirts unbuttoned. I wasn't complaining. :D

Well, I didn't get much crap in high school for wearing unfashionable clothes (I let my female friends make the important calls as to what I looked good in, which is true to this day), but I did see plenty of people who did get crap for it by assholes, which does make me support the idea of uniforms. Usually, it was tightish pants that were the subject of ridicule by certain assholes who thought that pants should fit like weather balloons and be attached via belt to keep them up.

I used to hate uniforms simply because in HS I was a snot-nosed little punk who gave authority The Finger :finger: so I was constantly in trouble, natch. When I look back on it all, I'd take the uniform over class- and gangster-based oppression. IMNSHO Gangsters are Terrorists, just minus the suicide bombs. Fuck off, Gangbangers!

As for shoes, there's nothing I know of that can touch Steel Toe Brahma Boots (get em at Walmart for 35 bux) for sheer durability, toughness, and Damage Effect when forcefully applied to an enemy's nuts! They're called 'Asskicker Boots' for a reason...

"bout the dress code, that has been my school's code for a LONG time, and noone cares. Only a few teachers follow it sctrictly, they let you use some common sense. (>13 inches for shorts, btw, someome was wondering about "how do you know how long" on the first page). SOme girls try to come to school wearing almost nothing, but they are stopped and sent home. (these girls tend to be the ones who get expelled for fucking in the school bathroom, but that's another story) They have to set limits of SOME kind to shut people up, but they don't have to follow them when said people aren't looking :P (reminds me of my English teacher, he has a huge list of rules, tells you to ignore them and just use common sense...he's cool like that..."is that gum? did I say you could chew gum? No? Well, ask me next time, just to make sure it's okay. Carry on.")

About the shoes, does it really matter what they look like as long as they work (and don't bankrupt you?) Of course, you want to keep up with style a little bit, and try to stay within your own gender's style, but besides that, all that doesn't matter...

aerius wrote:Just saw this one on the local TV news. A local highschool has put in a dress code for female students that goes something like this:

- No cleavage
- No short shorts or skirts
- No exposed underwear
- No exposed midriffs (shirts & tops must come down to the pants)

There were a couple other points but I didn't catch them. Violators would be sent home. They also did some interviews with parents, students, and the school principal. The pricipal was all for it since it was her idea, she went on about public decency and how it would cut down on classroom distractions and some other stuff, and the parent had the same viewpoint in her interview. One student was indifferent since it wouldn't affect her anyways, and another one wasn't too happy about it.

Personally I'm thinking WTF is this shit? While teenage girls probably shouldn't be wearing G-strings & bikinis in school, this is going a bit too far. So how exactly are they going to decide if shorts or skirts are too short? What if some girl leans over a desk and unknowingly shows some cleavage? And what the hell is this no exposed midriffs thing? I can understand not wanting girls running around looking like total sluts (Britney Spears anyone?) but this is going a bit too far. No cleavage? What the hell?
Those four things you mentioned are not that exotic or strict dress code rules. About 3 years ago my old highschool instituted a new dress code that required males to wear khakis or slacks with shirt that has a collar either Polo style or a full button up, with sneakers becoming outlawed as footwear meaning they had to wear some sort of dress shoe or boot(but no steel toe boots). I am not sure what new rules they implemented for females as my younger cousin only told me of his new dress rules. This is in a public school district where rednecks are common so wrangler bluejeans(which is all I wore in HS) are no longer allowed.
I don't understand why they just didn't implement a school uniform and enforce that instead of those ridiculous new codes but hey school boards are all about suppressing the kids.

Do you know what I don't get? Dress codes at non-educational events at school, like dances. I believe the principle of dress codes is to limit distractions, but at a dance, there is no learning to distract horny male teens from.

The dress codes are fairly lenient where I go to school, but it seems the most attractive girls go to schools with unifroms.

My school only had two dances that I ever found out about (official, anyway): Homecoming and Prom. Dress codes are fairly obvious there.
