I'm inclined to say the first picture may be more correct to scale. The local science museum here has a set of fossilized Megaladon jaws that are about that big.

The first picture is very close, if not right on target. The largest Megaladon jaws on record could fit a family of six within them, but would not come close to swallowing an entire yacht.

Of course, the shark in the first picture has its jaws hyperextended (notice the gums showing at the top of its mouth) which makes it appear even larger.

I think it is believed that C. megalodon is between 45-60 feet. Remember the estimates that had it pegged at 120 feet?

Since we have not yet found any fossils of its skeleton (its made of cartilage, and that does not fossilize well), we may never know its true size. Unless we clone it.

Let me comment on the statement from the Megalodon home page. It would not be hard at all for the C. megalodon to tear apart a T. rex if it was in the ocean with the megalodon. Conversely, a T. rex would easily tear apart a C. megalodon if it were stranded on a beach.

Liplurodon would kick it's ass though, T'rex was a small and slightly annoying predator next to these things. I read that first Meg book, it not only sucked it blowed as well. I know they're big buggers but the image of a frogman swimming around the sharks innards till he finds it's heart was a bit much. In fact it was shite.

Not necesarily. Here is a size comparison of Tyrannosaurus rex, Liopleurodon, and Carcharodon megalodon with a great white shark:

The largest Liopleurodon found is about 12 to 15 meters, and the size from the one on Walking with Dinosaurs (the one I believe that you are referring) has not been proven to exist.

But we can make educated guesses based off modern shark jaws, which, IIRC, is how we got the 45-60.

Unless we clone it.

There's bad ideas, there's worse ideas, and then there's exraordinarily horrible ideas. I think that fits into the final category.

The only way a shark would ever twist itself like that would be to go after prey, which it clearly isn't. Notice that its right eye and nostril are out of the water, which is very debilitating to a shark's senses. More importantly, the shark's nose is out of the water, which means that its greatest sense organ, the Ampullae of Lorenza (which it uses to sense vibrations in the water) is above the water. In addition to that, its mouth is open, but the jaws aren't hyperextended. My guess is that a picture of a shark just swimming along was taken from below, then pasted onto the yacht pic (after they turned the shark white, of course).

Chopper Attack

This one looks more realistic. In the book, the Meg sensed the vibrations from the chopper's rotors on the water, decided it was prey, and made a leap for it. The shark's jaws are correctly hyperextended, and the water is far from calm. Much better then that other picture of a helicopter I've seen (the one with the shark attacking a man on a rope).

My only complaint here is: where the fuck is that blood coming from? A gash leaking that much red stuff would be clearly visible, and if it's from prey, it should be coming from the throat, not the damn jaw!

Hehe, I have read Meg... twice... love it...

That scene actually does hapen in the book... the guy slams into the shark, and the denticles all over the skin... well, lets just say he doent have a chest, then the giant fish opens its mouth...
