They've got a point. Metric is fine and dandy, but I'd scream too if some commission in Brussels told me I'm not allowed to use inches, pounds, and degrees Farenheit in my own business (assuming this site isn't exaggerating what's actually going on).

I'm of a mixed mind. For one thing, the English system is really outdated and not used much anymore, but on the other hand, large amount of our industry is in the English system and it would be economically unfeasible to change industry to metric, or America would be using metric by now.

You are perhaps misusing the term "Luddite"? There is no technological difference between the two systems.

I don't see a problem with double labeling, if a shift to metric is required. Those who want to keep the old system alongside the metric can do so, their choice. It's exactly the way we handled the shift from FIM to €, and some places still have the old FIM prices listed, though those are gradually vanishing. If they want to prevent using double labeling, that's stupid.

Just wait. If we succeed at nothing else in Iraq, we shall succeed at getting the new government there to adopt the English system of measurement!

Actually, it's fourteen pounds equals one stone. (And I'm not even English.)

Too easy! What about how many fluid ounces in a gill?

Or in a gallon?

And would that be a US gallon (which I see you Americans call a 'British' gallon) or the gallon which we use in Britain (which we Britons call an Imperial gallon).

And how many stones would that quantity of water weigh? (It's so much easier one 1ml of H20 = 1g)

And are these people therefore advocating that, because its got more factors, we in the UK should revert to our previous currency? Pounds, shillings, pence that is? For those who don't know it was 12 shillings to a pound, god-only-knows how many farthings to a sovereign(sp?), and I believe groats, h'appennies and thruppeny bits were all in on the act.

Fluid ounces in a gallon: 1 gal = 4 qt = 8 pt = 16 c = 128 fl oz.

My pitiful mistake only proves my point. Or possibly my stupidity, I forget.

Imperial makes my brain hurt. IN anycase the whole movement sounds like some backwater conservative club from Toryville, Middle-of-friggin-nowhere-somewhere-down-south.

Well, they are teaching both English and metric now in schools here, but the economic problem is that all our machinery is labelled in English system exclusively and is extensive enough that they can't just round everything up and relabel it. The change to metric will be gradual, as more and more new industrial tools and equipment will be labeled in both, and then eventually in metric. The change will be gradual in our schools too.

Snap out of it, woman! The English system is dying, and good riddens too! You will learn to love the the Système International and you will be one of us evolved individuals who enjoys a universial system of measures that are Base 10, like our mathematics. You will be one of us.

Quite right. That's supposed to be 12 pennies to a shilling, twenty shillings to a pound. And I think it was twenty-one shillings in a guinea, right? The guinea being an archaic unit even in 1970 but still in use at that time by the horse trade? Don't ask me about florins and farthings though.

Down with the metric system! And down with soccer!!!
