Mass Delusion spreads in Germany.

Post by The Duchess of Zeon »

You people over there in the land of the Reich better watch out, because whatever it is, it looks like it's catchy. The latest proposal apparently has multi-party support, and is for no less than:

German Politicians call for Child Suffrage.

Yes, that's right. Here's the text:
Politicians call for children's vote

A group of cross-party politicians in the German Bundestag has called for the introduction of a children's vote. With the "voting right from birth", parents should be able to vote on behalf of their children. The group said their aim was to attract more attention to children's issues: "It is unfair that more than 5 percent of Germany's citizens cannot vote". The group's draft petition which was presented on Thursday calls for the possibility for parents to vote in the name of their children until they reach the age of 18 and that parents should talk to their children about election decisions as soon as they reach an appropriate age. Critics say these propositions are naive. "Many parents have a completely different opinion in politics than their children", Irmingard Schewe-Gerigk from the Greens said.

...Are there really that many people in the world who are so stupid as to not understand that some people, IE, children, are simply not mentally developed enough to vote until later in life, IE, when they're adults, and that by necessity suffrage needs to come at an arbitrary age? And that, as that Green succinctly pointed out (rather incredibly), giving their parents the control of a vote for them would just be giving their parents an additional vote (or vote). People from certain groups--like, say, fundamentalists, either Christians (in the U.S.) or Muslims (in Germany)--who wanted more political power, could then just have a lot of children, something that they always preach is great anyway. This is possibly the most stupid idea the world has seen since the leather gun.

I don't even think most adults are mentally competent to vote. I think there should be a skill-testing question administered at the voting booth.

Okay, let's assume for the moment that five percent of the population are fundamentalists wackos of child-bearing age and they start having children with the goal of having an average of, oh, let's say nine children per couple, which is hardly impossible and was quite possibly reached in some agrarian societies.

...Want to think for a moment how much that magnifies their voting power after a few years?

Nevermind the general stupidity and idiocy that will be involved out of this; there would probably be calls to lower the age at which a child could directly vote, or take a test to do so, etc. Or the fact that the whole voting spectrum would be screwed up as people exercise power which, even if it's just one or two votes per family with children on average, becomes demographically a massive effect in politics.

Yes, but the question would be administered by poll employees, who are invariably on the low-end of the gene-pool, and devised by politicians, who aren't even in the gene-pool. Far better to balance out the stupidity of the average voter with something else, which is why I eternally shall curse the Seventeenth Amendment and predict it to be the long-term cause of the fall of the Republic.

The sad thing is, in America that would probably eliminate quite a few voters (hell, old people in Florida can't even read a fucking ballot).

Seems like an inventive way to encourage Germans to have more children and thus offset the problem of their aging population.

Inventively stupid, because the only people who are going to be encouraged to have more children by something like this are ones you don't want to have more children, and even if does increase the German population that will hardly offset the massive political and social disturbances it could cause even discounting that.

Actually, this almost sounds like a Nazi-style scheme to encourage women to have more good Aryan children. I mean, who cares how many votes each family has if you've exterminated all the undesirables already and the Nazi party is always going to win the elections?

That idea is floating around for years now, and I doubt that it will get through the Bundestag and Bundesrat...

And it is unlikely that Muslims could swing a vote here. For one, they'd have to be Germans to vote, aa have to be the children getting the vote. Simply being born on German soil won't get you German citizenship...

I know plenty of children who would make a more informed voting decision than most adults. Voting rights should not regard age at all, but only sufficient intelligence. Testing that is a difficult problem though.

Well, we here in Germany have a thing, that is called "Sommerloch" (can be translated with "void in the summer"). This is, when all the important politicans are on vacation, and the people from the backseats make thier appearance, mostly with absurd things to be aknowleged. It is a seasonal phenomen, and should not be taken too seriously.
