Johnny Depp badmouths America in Germany

Post by Joe »

BERLIN (Reuters) - Hollywood star Johnny Depp said on Wednesday the United States was a stupid, aggressive puppy and he would not live there until the political climate changed.
The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the "Pirates of the Caribbean," told the German news magazine Stern he was happier staying in the south of France with his wife, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, and their two children.
"America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he said.
"My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out," said the star of the off-beat films "Edward Scissorhands" and "Dead Man."
Depp slammed George W. Bush's administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots," he told Stern.
More insightful commentary.

This may be anti-democratic but should he be blacklisted from playing in American movies from now on,and declared persona non-grata(sp) :?

No.

Blacklisting is not the answer. If he finds it harder to find parts because producers (except for Tim Burton) don't like him as much, so be it. But to pass around an order denying him work on a universal basis because of his opinion... sounds a little too authoritarian for my taste.

Anyone who would care enough to have him blacklisted would be an insane jackass.

Shut the fuck up. McCarthyism was a bad idea the first time and it's bad this time around. You don't have to go see his movies but blacklisting hims the stupidist thing I've hear in a long time.

The problem I have with folks like Depp and the Ditzy Twits is that they badmouth their primary source of income in the foreign press rather than doing so at home. At least other celebrities like Michael Moore aren't so cowardly.

Seriously, why do the words of an actor who doesn't even live in this country anymore bother you so much? Bah, I recall that whatshername chick that was badmouthing France because she thought everyone there was lazy (and interestingly was a huge fan of Thatcher, an insane market-worshipping, psuedo Randian witch who thought there was no such thing as society). Did you see any rabble rousers calling for a blacklist in her case?

I mean, beeeeeeee, how many people badmouth their home country each and every day?

If you are so obsessed with actors who make simple-minded remarks about America, just start a boycott or something. At any rate, cut the commie/nazi shit, okies?

Oh, of course it was, and it was rightly badmouthed (unlike the truly xenophobic shit France pulls, which doesn't attract nearly as much criticism).

If any celebrity badmouths America, they're going to be called cowardly, and people are going to feign total outrage and start boycotts over a hill of beans. That's just how the current political climate is.

I don't recall anybody calling Moore a coward. They called him a bunch of other things, but at least the guy had the stones to go on US television and badmouth the administration.

Not really. Most celebrities who have been vocal about their opinions have not been boycotted (no one is boycotting anything by George Clooney or Martin Sheen, for example, and I doubt anyone will be boycotting Johnny Depp). The Ditzy Twits are unique in that their audience was particularly sensitive to America bashing, thus they were boycotted.
