The O-Wing released!

Post by Kenny_10_Bellys »

Rob Wilson's design is finally released for download on my website for all of those out there with expensive 3D software. I've finally gotten around to finishing off my webshite, you'll find it at http://www.axeman3d.com and the O-Wing is now released into the wild for Lightwave. There's a bunch of other models as well, and the number will be growing over the next week or so as I package up more of the models I've made in the past year as well as those sent to me by my friends. Enjoy.

Hey Axeman, any chance of getting a high-res version of this on a solid-color background for the purposes of making a desktop for myself? You chould send it via email if you want...

Even better would be a transparent PNG-24...

Looks like there might be just enough clearance for it to pop out and trundle forward...

Still, not as bad as the Naboo Starfighter

He'd have to go through the bottom, notice how there are no seams for the arms.

Ugh, the Naboo fighter...I wanted to cheer when a fragment of the Senator's ship smacked one into the abyss. :D

Like the Starfighter though, the opening appears to be perfectly round, not allowing for the protrusion of R2's holocam. It was probably just an oversight on Axeman's part, however - but in this case it's not as bad as Doug Chiang forgetting that the R2 unit is not permanent like it was on the Jedi Starfighter and thus, stupidly, making it into the canon.

If I remember correctly Rob wanted either a fixed unit or a somewhat different droid of a modified design which he never actually specified. The R2 unit was put in place by Alan Hart, it's his full R2 model so if you download the O-Wing you also get a fully detailed R2 model at no extra cost! As it is you could say that the panels either side of the R2 are hinged at the outer panel line and actually swing open to allow the R2 unit access, then clamp down to hold him snug. I never liked just dropping them in a hole, I mean what if he did a roll? He'd fall out!

I'll do a couple of shots with the model tonight and then post them up for you to use as you see fit Dalton.

OK, that makes more sense (Rob Wilson often does :teeth:). Though that still doesn't explain R2 plugging himself into the N-1

Man I remember when this was a crude sketch ona peiece of paper, ah the design process at work.

That's the inherent wonder of CGI, taking ideas and giving them some semblance of form, even if it's only virtual. The joy it brings people when they see their idea live and breath is one of the better things in life. In fact it's a mystery to me why all people don't want to sit in front of PCs for hours a day learning complex bits of software and staying up all hours of the night designing, building and rendering ickle spaceships. Oh, wait...

Kinda looks a little bit like a Gunstar, just without the big projections.

Very cool design. I really like this one. Much better than the art I've seen of the E-Wing.

I have to hold my hand up here and say that even though I built the thing, I'm not a huge fan of it. My normal criteria for taking on a project has been stated before, it's...

1. Is it a really cool design?
2. Am I being payed to do it?
3. Will there be sexual favours if I make it?
4. Is it sufficiently interesting and challenging that I'll see it finished?

If I make a model it's because it met one or more of these criteria, and the O-Wing was an interesting design (point 4) and had hints that it might even be cool looking when finished (point 1). In my opinion it never really sang to me as i hoped it would, it narrowly missed the first law of Kenny.

If I'd had complete freedom of design then the wing would have been wider across the x-axis (sideways), shorter along the Z-axis (front to back) and a bit thinner, kinda like a flattened ellipse. The body would have been longer as well, with the engines mounted more 'in' the wing rather than on it, or even on the inner surface of the wing. The other change would have been the cockpit, I'd have moved it a little way back from the nose, although nowhere near as much as an X-Wing. Still, it's different enough to be interesting and not as derivative as many of the SW designs we see from fans, and I would not wish to toy with Robs original concept.

These are beautiful! What I was looking for was just the O-Wing on a transparent background so I could make my own starfield and nebula and crap, but these will do very nicely. Well done, and thanks!

Just for a laugh I made my own version of what an O-Wing fighter might look like. This is just a 5-minute model to show the kind of configuration I described above, more along the lines of the X-Wing and Z-95. If I get some positive feedback from the boards I might actually work on it, but for now it's just a concept. What do you think, worth pursuing?

Wow, hello background!

As for the O-Wing MkII, why not?

Fair enough, it's got a good response everywhere i posted it so i think I'll give it the full X-Wing detailing treatment, just so we can all see it's meant to be a Star Wars vessel. I'll post a new thread for it when I actually have something to show, the model above was just a 5 minute test job and wont do for further detailing.

It looks fantastic, Thank you Kenny and Alan. Now of course I have to get on with building the Page for the FUQ. Kenny, expect PM's soon. :D

On the Droid, there was a Pic of it in the original concept sketch. I do like the idea of the fold down flaps to hold it in place, nice touch. The way it gets out is it has proper arms mounted directly above the legs (the legs only going 4/5 of the way up its torso, instead of a regular R2 unit where they go all the way up. These arms allow it to properly hold cargo/equipment/tools as the O-wing is like a Harrier in tht it is forward based and able to be deployed with the minimum of support, therefore the Astro-mech must be more durable and useful (no spindly little grabbers for large loads). Also there would be recessed hand/footholds in the sides for the pilot and astromech to use to enter and leave the fighter, along with the normal retracting ladder from the underside. When in flight these are covered by panels.

I couldn't have the Astro mech go through the bottom because every spare inch of space inside is used for equipment or power generation.

Oh and I now have a new desktop. :D
