How do you feel about that? A bit richer we hope. Please consider donating just a small amount to help some of the poorest people in the world. Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour's salary (approx $34.37)
Oh, and in case you’re interested you are the 54,137,065 richest person in the world.

There are 5,868,969,359 people poorer than you. (And how many richer? Exactly? So I know who to find and rob!)

Please consider donating just a small amount to help some of the poorest people in the world. (Fuck you, I'm a teacher. I already do enough do-gooding, thanks.) Everything you pointed out is a valid way to manage or look at money. However, even if you are extremely frugal you cant escape the cost of housing in the Bay Area and Boston markets. That was my real point. When I tell people from other parts of the country what a home costs here they usually gasp. Except for folks from Boston or maybe Manhatten.greenmm wrote:

Yeah, there are some 2 bedroom jobs that go for $1,000,000+, depending on the neighborhood. It's a bitch and a half. Of course, we in the Bay Area could always move to some place like Hollister (farming community) and get a sweet house on the cheap, but who the fuck would want to live out there?TrailerParkJawa wrote:Everything you pointed out is a valid way to manage or look at money. Even the outer regions of the Bay Area are getting expensive. And like you said who wants to commute that far? What happens when the economy recovers? Back to your 2.5 hour commute each way? No, thanks.Robert Treder wrote: Yeah, there are some 2 bedroom jobs that go for $1,000,000+, depending on the neighborhood. It's a bitch and a half. Although, I do think there is a lot of wealth here that we dont realize. My cousin visited from Georgia and said she had never seen so many BMW's, Lexus', and other luxury cars in one place before.

Yeah, even in my area home prices have become ridiculous. I mean, seriously, my home is about 1000 square feet, cost me 94K, and could already after 4 years be sold for about 110K. Yet just 2 miles down the road, they have new "luxury" homes going in they want people to shell out 250K for, but while the house is bigger, the plot is actually smaller, the homes are crappily made (the nice siding, stonework and bricks covering up prefab particle board and plywood), you can't grow a flower garden (let alone a vegetable garden), and you have to have your lawn furniture match your house's trim to within 2 shades -- and they only have a limited number of trim colors to choose from in the first place. Oh, and did I mention they forbid chain link fences, because it "adversely affects home values"?Robert Treder wrote:Yeah, there are some 2 bedroom jobs that go for $1,000,000+, depending on the neighborhood. Not enough to make it a luxury car.they share a chassis. and sometimes a frame. Thats it. The engines are completely different in most respects. so are the electronics and interior components. not to mention the materials used in contruction.
Case in point the Toyota Altezza vs. Lexus IS-300. Same car, except the Toyota's got a better engine.

Small plots, bigger house are the norm here. It has been that way for the last 10 years or so as available land has dried up. Does not surprise me that they have CC&R's for tract housing. That is not uncommon here too. Id like to visit another part of the country just to see the housing quality. For the price you pay here, I think the "quality" of the construction leaves much to be desired. Seems like from what you said we are not alone.
Just to contrast prices. My condo (top floor, corner unit. ) in a 3 story complex was 250,000. That is for 1 bedroom and a den. Roughly 900 square feet , its nice inside, vaulted ceiling, gas stove . But it is 17 years old and about 50 ft from an Amtrack line. Entry level prices for a small single family home range from 350,000 to 500,000.

I'm richer than that would indicate because Pittsburgh's got a low cost of living compared to other cities. It's possible to get an apartment for $150 a month here, though said apartment might be on the Hill (where the shadows lie) or in South Oakland (where the shadows smoke pot and are generally mellow) or in Homewood (where the shadows are a gang that beats you up for your wallet). Really, like has been said, it depends on where you live. If I went to the small upstate New York town that my one aunt lives at, I would probably quickly gain the nickname "Hollywood" based on my income... but if I went to the neighborhood where my uncle in Indiana lives and told them my income, they'd probably start flicking quarters to me because they'd assume I was a bum (well, that or have me arrested, because a bum in their neighborhood is clearly up to no good).

Oh, and in case you’re interested you are the 36,007,565 richest person in the world.
Me:
Sorry, if you earn less than $90 a year we are unable to calculate your position on the richlist.
If this is the case you would be one of the billions of people who earn less than $2 a day. Typically you would also not have access to a computer or an Internet connection.
If you are earning less than $90 a year it¹d be unfair to ask you to donate money to Care International, if however, you actually earn more than this it may be worth re-calculating your position
Of course, that depends whether "Leeching off of your parents" qualifies as a job.
