Don't blame the poll. "Realist" is the recognized name of the pragmatist school of thought in political science. It was coined to describe a school of thought in contrast to "idealist" foreign policies. Since then, we've developed finer distinctions between the various idealist foreign policies, some of which are quite realistic if not pragmatic, but the name "realist" has stuck as a description of pragmatism for convenience's sake.

Realist?? WTF?? I'd rather describe myself as what Americans call a "liberal", even though I don't subscribe to any ideology per se. (and definately not liberalism in its original incarnation!)

Again, this is based on foreign-policy only. Liberal domestic policy does not neccessarily imply liberal foreign policy.

Indeed. Realism (maximal, minimal or in between) doesn't imply that it's any more "real" than another - it's just a name.

I came out a realist. Though I was torn on a couple of answers and had I gone with the other choice, I suspect I would have come out neoconservative.

Phew. Ever since I went rabidly Communist, then rabidly Libertarian for a period and then fell out from that, my political leaning have been kinda hard to classify...

Stupid fucking test. The answers were stupid, restrictive and almost never represented my true view (especially for NK).

Based on your answers, you are most likely a liberal.
I enjoyed the Iran question, seeing how I'm currently reading Christine Bird's travelogue Neither East nor West

I'm most likely a... Liberal? WTF is their scoring system smoking?

* Are wary of American arrogance and hypocrisy
Definitely.

* Trace much of today's anti-American hatred to previous US foreign policies.
Well, they haven't helped much...

* Believe political solutions are inherently superior to military solutions
Not always... but they're worth a shot.

* Believe the US is morally bound to intervene in humanitarian crises
No!

* Oppose American imperialism
Of course.

* Support international law, alliances, and agreements
To a point.

* Encourage US participation in the UN
No.

* Believe US economic policies must help lift up the world's poor
Hell no!

Anyone notice the liberals are not in very good company? Woodrow Wilson's and Jimmy Carter's foreign policies are not exactly worth emulating....
