In American politics, tables have turned so often that there is only one common difference between the Democrats and Republicans through history:

The Democrats disagree with the Republicans, and vice versa.

An example of Democrats and Republicans changing agendae significantly but still opposing each other:

1861 - Democrats are uniformly against emancipating slaves, while a significant portion of the Republicans do their best to abolish slavery.

A hundred years later...

1961 - John F. Kennedy, a Democrat is in power and wholeheartedly supports the civil rights movement. Because of this, many white conservatives opposed to the civil-rights movement would rather vote Republican.

JFK's support for civil rights was tepid at best. He proposed, but didn't seriously push for any legislation during his term because he was worried about losing votes.

I can't stand LBJ, but to give the devil his due he did move on civil rights and got the civil rights laws passed, whereas JFK did nothing.

Of course, LBJ once remarked that he pushed civil rights 'because we'll have those niggers voting Democrat for the next hundred years' :x

It was during the election of 1968 with Nixon's 'southern strategy' that the 'Solid South' started going Republican, not during Kennedy's time.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Flawed analysis. At that point the Republican party had a much better record on civil rights than the Democrats (and something like 80 percent of the Congressional Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act, compared to around 60 percent of the Democrats).

Heheh, quite funny. I did like how they poked fun at both parties pretty much equally.

Just mug the person. If your shot dead its a Republican, if your not its a newly converted Republican.
