Re: Cry me a river, Microshaft.....
Japan, the world's second-largest economy, made a proposal at an Asian economic summit this week to build an inexpensive and trustworthy open-source operating system that would be based on a system such as Linux, which can be copied and modified freely.
Total logical disconnect. We'd like to see the market decide who the winners are in the software industry," said Tom Robertson, Microsoft's Tokyo-based director for government affairs in Asia. ......."Governments should not be in the position to decide who the winners are"
The world through the eyes of a maniac:
Japanese government develops an open-source OS = Japanese government is forcing this OS on people
I think there must be something in the Redmond water

Of course not. It's best to leave that decision in the hands of a monopolistic corporation, which will have the best interests of the people at heartWe'd like to see the market decide who the winners are in the software industry," said Tom Robertson, Microsoft's Tokyo-based director for government affairs in Asia. ......."Governments should not be in the position to decide who the winners are"
If Microsoft opened up their secret file formats and network protocols, there might be fair competition. As it is, they're the biggest enemies of open competition out there. Even their proponents will admit that the biggest reason to buy MSOffice is the fact that it can read MSWord files, which is a fine example of "locking in" a market.

"Fair competition" and Microsoft are not bedfellows. You personally admit to using MSOffice simply because everyone else does, and you can't afford to use some other package because their file format is secret so you're "locked in". You call that fair competition?Stravo wrote:There is something to be said about having to compete against a government and whether that is truly fair.

He did say that his dream was to have a computer on every desk, all running Micrsoft software.EmperorMing wrote:If I understand correctly, was it Bill Gates himself who said that there will be 'one' hardware supply house and 'one' software supply house?
Someone told me this once, and it fits with their business practice.

That is not a declaration of monopolistic intentions. That is a declaration of hope to be very successful.
Honestly, do you people even think between whining about MS and whining about Bill Gates?

This strikes me as being very silly. If Larry Bowa said his dream was to make everyone into a Phillies fan, we wouldn't interpret it as some evil scheme, we'd interpret it as a sign that Larry Bowa is on crack.Every computer, running Microsoft software ONLY.
Do you want him to say that he wishes everyone would use Linux? Of course he'll dream of everybody using MS products. The problem lies in the way he goes about pursuing this dream.

True. However, he pursued that hope by "de-commoditizing" the market, so as to remove open competition and replace it with essentially closed, locked-in markets. People buy MSOffice because it will read Word files and nobody else can with 100% reliability since the format is indecipherable; this is how he used peoples' own property (their documents) to lock them in as consumers.Howedar wrote:That is not a declaration of monopolistic intentions. Honestly, do M$ apologists even think before dismissing criticisms of Microsith or its Dark lord as mere whining?Honestly, do you people even think between whining about MS and whining about Bill Gates?

2 weeks.
The will wait for the check to clear first
I do agree, Microsoft and Fair Competiotion do not go hand in hand.
I wish they did.
I mean, let me put it this way.
If M$ really wanted to achieve total market dominance and have everyone likiing it, all they would have to do is come up with a new version of Windows at a decent price (like $50 or so), with no bugs or security holes, complete with a new version of MS Office, again with no bugs an security holes, and release them on all platforms (IBM, Mac, etc), and make it easy to use
They'd slaughter everyone
They lack the brainpower to do this. (case in point "We fix secuirty holes as they become known", the response: MSBlaster)
It's sad really.
If Windows and Office were 'perfect' or near perfect, even if they were open format, everyone would eventually switch to them, just for the ease of training. (why learn 3 software programs when you can learn 1?)
Then they'd just have to release updates every few months instead of total rewrites every 2 years.
*SIGH*
Oh well.

If they did this, wouldn't they still be called a monopoly for dominating the whole computer OS market rather than just the PC OS market?Solauren wrote:2 weeks.

Since it stipulates that they stop every one of their anti-competitive practices, they would be dominant, not monopolistic. Mind you, if they did that, they would not be as dominant. There are a lot of people that would happily use the freeware OpenOffice instead of MSOffice if not for the file-format issue.Shinova wrote:If they did this, wouldn't they still be called a monopoly for dominating the whole computer OS market rather than just the PC OS market?
