Just a sudden thought on time travel...

I was thinking about the Borg, and Time Travel(TM), and ST:First Contact, and came to a disturbing realization: WTF ARE THE BORG THINKING?!?
So they travel to Earth, to invade a civilization that hasn't really been such a threat to them, and they lose, but in a desperate attempt, they travel BACK in time, in an attempt to sabotage the creation of Warp travel and the creation of the Federation, so they could assimilate them? So that they could assimilate some lame 21st Century civilization with lame technology, not to mention really really small "civlization" spanning a single world?!?
Is the Borg that stupid? I thought they wanted to assimilate everyone, to add others' technical knowledge to their own, etc. So why would them go back to the friggin' Stone Age to assimilate cavemen before they even evolve into a starfaring culture?
The best explanation is something along the lines of <technobabble> rift opens, screws with borg programming, borg go back in time.
Here's a better question ... why waste *all* your drones on the E-E? Send a few down earthside on recruiting missions. Then even if the crew blows the E-E (which they should have done much sooner) you still can send your message to the collective. The borg were *good* villians in TNG. The only real sore spot was the "individuality virus" and Hugh. In later shows they have no clear motive, they apparently have already met humans long ago, and their abilities take a distinct nose dive.

You know what the guys down on Earth have in those days? Here's a better question ... why waste *all* your drones on the E-E? Send a few down earthside on recruiting missions. Machine guns! Lovely kinetic weapons! Bang bang bang!
Possibly why the Borg didn't want to set foot on Earth and confined themselves to the E-E until re-enforcements arrived.

My point was why bother going back in time so they could assimilate a *less* advanced race... or maybe they discovered that they had reached their peak during the 21st century with kinetic weapons and armor, and then proceeded to go downhill with phasers and photons and pijamas and other crappy stuff?
Also, what's the point of going back and assimilate the Earthmen when they are a single world? Wouldn't it be better to let them colonize worlds and then assimilate each world?
Or that's what you mean by messing up their programming? Maybe the problem was having that stupid individualist bitch queen inside

It seemed to be some sort of ego trip, the Queen wanting to win by any means.Slartibartfast wrote:My point was why bother going back in time so they could assimilate a *less* advanced race... or maybe they discovered that they had reached their peak during the 21st century with kinetic weapons and armor, and then proceeded to go downhill with phasers and photons and pijamas and other crappy stuff?

Which really shouldn't make any sense for the Borg, and if they really want to win, maybe they should take the unprecidented step of sending TWO Cubes to Earth. What a concept.
