College Football!

Okay, it's time to pick which teams will achieve victory this Saturday on the gridiron! Here are some of the big matchups:
Place your bets!
- No. 1 Oklahoma at Alabama, 7:45 p.m.
No. 3 Miami vs. No. 18 Florida, 8 p.m.
No. 10 Florida State vs. Maryland, 7:15 p.m.
No. 13 LSU at Arizona, 10 p.m.
No. 15 Virginia at South Carolina, 12:30 p.m.
No. 16 Notre Dame vs. Washington State, 2:30 p.m.
No. 19 Auburn at Georgia Tech, 3:30 p.m.
Place your bets!
This sounds fun. We should keep this thread alive throughout the whole season.
1) Alabama. I say Bama comes out and embarasses the once-again overrated Oklahoma, thus securing Mike Shula's career for a couple of years.
2) Miami. Miami is looking strong and Florida may not be able to hold them.
3) FSU. Maryland looked terrible at NIU last week, while FSU looked pretty good against the Tarheels.
4) LSU. I'm not too sure about how good LSU is, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
5) Virginia. Has been generating a lot of buzz (some have even picked them to play for the national championship). Meanwhile, the Cocks had a somewhat mediocre offensive performance against a ho-hum team last week, so they should lose. If not, then my boys have something to worry about in two Saturdays...
6) Wazzu. Because I hate Notre Dame.
7) Auburn. Tech just blows (see the BYU game) and if Auburn can't win this one they're the most overrated team in years.

Neither am I but if Arizona doesn't suck ass I'll be real surprised. Everyone's been picking them to finish very near the bottom of the Pac-10, plus you have to remember that there was a bit of a player revolt against the coach last year. I'm not sure that's something that can be overcome quickly.Durran Korr wrote:

As a Washington State fan, I'm concerned about this game. WSU is pretty strong all around this year, except that Kegel is just not up to the task of being a Division 1 starting QB, rather like Fife at Oregon last year.Durran Korr wrote: 6) Wazzu. Because I hate Notre Dame.

i was at that buckeye game last saturday. y'know, as much as i like to win, i like a close game even better. that game just got kinda boring.

Close games are good once and a while, but they're stressful as hell. I almost had a fucking heart attack at UGA-Auburn last year, it got so emotional.Alan Bolte wrote:i was at that buckeye game last saturday. y'know, as much as i like to win, i like a close game even better. that game just got kinda boring.

On a sidenote, the folks at ESPN and SI love to talk about the Heisman race, even this early in the season. So does anyone have a crystal ball telling them who will grab the coveted trophy this year?

I see Ohio State bckers here, how do you guys answer the charge that the only reason you guys won the big ten was because you ducked the Hawkeyes last year? Personally I think Clarett would have probably been the deciding factor in that game but OSU beat michigan at home in a close game while the Hawkeyes won At Ann Arbor in convincing fashion, that offense was also far tougher than Illinois or Purdue.
This year I don't see any big ten teams able to compete.
Still though, go Trojans.

As for whether the Hawkeyes would have won... not only is it a year too late, there's no way of predicting how the game would have turned out. Basing any comparison off of their face-offs against one opponent (Michigan) could never be valid, even if all 3 teams played their best on both occasions. Heck, even if you compared every matchup where the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes played the same opponent from last season, you'd still have to make allowances for the quality of play of each team involved at the time, injuries and abscences, and still wouldn't be able to make a conclusive judgement because of the sheer random factors involved (weather, human error, referees, Murphy's Law, etc.).
Even if the Hawkeyes beat OSU this year (assuming they play, which I have no idea if they do or not), it would mean squat for last season.
They do play but if Iowa is even 75% as good as they were at the end of the Big 10 season last year I'll be very surprised.greenmm wrote: Even if the Hawkeyes beat OSU this year (assuming they play, which I have no idea if they do or not), it would mean squat for last season.
Also, in my lifetime I think Iowa has maybe beaten Ohio State twice. It could only be once. There seems to be a bit of jinx going on there if you ask me. Also, it looks like they are playing in Columbus so It's likely going to be a messy one for the Hawks. Still, here's hoping this is one of those rare years.

GO JACKETS!
That's right, this hardcore Dawg fan thanks the Yellow Jackets from the bottom of his heart for smashing the hopes and dreams of those arrogant, assholish Tiger fans and embarassing that Steve Spurrier wannabe of a coach as they did today.
That said, Auburn is at this point clearly the most shockingly overrated NCAA team in years. The analysts who picked Auburn to play for the national title ought to hang their heads in shame.

Re: College Football!
I feel that I must give the obligatory GO VOLS!!! in response to that. Only team that a Vols fan likes worse than Alabama is Florida, or maybe Notre Dame, hehehe.jegs2 wrote:

(BTW, We beat out Marshall 34-24. Quite unexpected, actually. I was expecting to see a total blowout, and my prediction was 27-10. Marshall came within 4 points of us in the 4th, and it was getting pretty hairy. I would also like to say that this was one of the worst called games I have seen in a long while. For example, a would-be touchdown was called incomplete, yet, from the replay, it was QUITE obvious that the player had control of the ball during and after hitting the ground. But, we still won, although this is going to do nothing to help our poll standings.)
Oklahoma 20, Alabama 13
Oklahoma is a good football team, and Bama had to play mistake-free football tonight in order to come away with a victory. That didn't happen, and the Tide fell. While the showing for Bama was impressive against the Number 1 team in the nation, a loss is still a loss.
Wow, what a finish for Miami! The Gators had the Canes on the ropes, and Miami came back to win -- that shows real strength. Congratulations to Miami. That being said, Florida should move up in the polls for coming so close to knocking off the Number 3 team in the nation.
Quite a day for college football! Auburn lost again (way to go, kitty-cats), this time to Georgia Tech. Tennessee escaped Marshall. LSU smashed Arizona. Wake Forsest knocked off Number 11 N.C. State (sorry, Kelly). Penn State crept into the Top 25, only to be knocked right back into the land of the unranked by feisty Wake Forest (who'd-a thunk it). The other USC slam-dunked 15th-ranked Virginia. And the vaunted Notre Dame barely escaped a loss to Wazzu.
The season's off to a rip-roaring start, and next week promises more chills and spills.

My team embarrassed itself pretty good today in a 29-10 win over Middle Tennessee State. The defense looked good, though not quite as sharp as last week, but the offense was the very definition of the word "sloppy." Penalties, penalties everywhere; we must've had more penalties in the first half of the first quarter than we had for the duration of last week's game. The amount of times we were drawn off-sides...surreal. The mental aspect of the game was clearly way out of place. I don't know if they got overconfident or what, but there's no excuse for such poor red zone offensive performance at home after a nearly flawless road victory. Absolutely terrible discipline. Not to mention watching a star receiver pull his hamstring on a pointless, late 4th-quarter punt return...yeesh. I'm glad this happened at a relatively easy home game, because these problems could have cost us a game against a high-quality opponent. I'm just looking forward to getting these problems fixed, so we can beat some serious Cock (pun intended) next weekend.
Good day though. And one more rant: What the fuck is it with Ohio State? They get ranked 2nd in the nation by both polls, and can barely get past a team that the Gators absolutely manhandled last week? Puh-lease. I think it's finally time for the sports media to spit OSU's cock out of its collective mouth (*cough*herbstreit*cough*).

Haha, go LSU. 52-7 right now watch our 2nd string defense pounce on ASU first string offense. This is like my slaughtering Poles in EUII.

ASU smote Northern Arizona 34-14, but it wasn't that close.
And WSU fell to Notre Dame

Sooo, any idea on how long it will be before people are ready to run coach Makovic (Arizona's coach) out of town?
Tomey's teams may have had boring offenses but in most cases the overall team was halfway decent and they ran him out.
You know what's funny about the Arizona--LSU game? I came into work and FOX sports was finishing up showing the game live. Right after that a rerun of the entire game was airing. I guess the local LSU fans got something to laugh at and enjoy during their after game partying.

UNA wins big.
In Division II football news, my alma mater, the University of North Alabama football team smeared Stillman College by a score of 68 to 7. When I was at UNA, their football team won three consecutive NCAA Division II football national championships, but over the past several years, they sputtered and came up mostly with losing seasons. Perhaps the mighty UNA Lions are on a comeback now...
