some of the ones I've heard of

1. Federation
2. Empire
3. Confederacy- is this a government that exist in opposition to another, there was the confederacy on Tarsonis in starcraft
4. Consortium
5. Protectorate
6. Directorate.

Not really...a confederacy is a union of states that typically has a very weak central government. The Terran confederacy is arranged like this, I assume, but Tarsonis became extremely powerful and began dominating the other planets.

Hence the Articles of Confederation back before the US Constitution, which is a stronger central covernemnt, and later on the Confederate States of America, which emphasized state rights and state authority over central power.
