I never understood why people didn't buy Freespace 2. It's arguably the best space sim since TIE Fighter, and nobody purchased it. Compare this to the waves of people who rushed out to buy The Sims and all the shitty Tycoon games. All the best games are under-appreciated.

Sorta. If you don't make it to the gate in time, you get an ending in which the Admiral of the Aquitane consoles the crew over the loss of the squadron leader of the Blue Lions. More often then not people do die on this mission because the mission is designed that the enemies keep popping out further and further from the gate drawing you farther away. The best way to survive that mission is to have chossen the Perseus Interceptor on the mission before hand. Gives you the speed to attempt to survive.
Actually the best way is to fool around the gate until you are told that you should leave. IIRC, there's no real reason to leave the gate. I think even some fighters get into firing range so you won't get too bored.

No, you will be REALLY bored and miss out on quite a few bomber and capship kills. Best thing is to either pay attention to the time or take a note of the convoys. When the 5th convoy enters the system, make your run for the Node.

Um . . . FS2 sorta never got enough sales for the publisher to warrent an expansion pack . . .

I HATE ORIGIN.
Erm . . . why? Origin sure as hell wasn't responsible for the decline of the space sim flight market . . . and they might still be making new WC and Ultimas if EA hadn't yanked their chain.

And if this is just an excuse to flame Origin fans,

Then you'll be kind enough to explain away the package I saw in a store here about seven months after the release of FS? Because it happened to have FS2 and an expansion pack of 40 additional missions, all bundled into one package. I'd have bought that if I hadn't already had FS2, courtesy of a friend who gave it to me as a Christmas present when it first came out.

Perhaps they were just user made scenarios that had made it into a special release, but there was a blurb about an additional campaign ala Silent Threat for FS1 in the back cover...

It's sad that Freespace 2 never sold well. It's one of those games that would've deserved good sales . . .

Cyril, once you've bought your Freespace 2 and finished the campaign, you might want to check out some of the mods and single player missions that several fans have made. The Babylon Project is one of the modifications that are worth the look. They've had some problems with their second release, but it should be coming.

Either way, it requires foreknowledge (sp?) since by the time you're told you have to evacuate, it's too late.

But IIRC the first time I played they gave me a few minutes and I basically warped out AFTER watching the star kinda blow up... so I did make it on time. No chance if you're too far away tho. It all comes down to luck OR knowing what's going to happen next.

Hey, I like the sims :x . But I got both so its all good :D. The Sims appeal was that it allowed the person to be God. Admitidly it grows old real quick just watching your sims live, but oddly enough you just can't leave them alone. But Freespace II should have gotten more sales, it is the best flight sim game I've played.

I lked the fighter designs of FS1 and ST more than FS2. They looked more sturdy. tougher somehow......like they could take all the shit you could throw at them and laugh.

The new fighters are too curvy (Herc Mk2). Too soft and orangic-looking.

A nice thing was that the bad guys didn't have "living" ships made of organic material. If anything, these guys had actually evolved to the point that their bodies were like space alloys :)

Kinda like the spiders in Lost in Space.
