Swedish foreign minister just died

Anna Lindh, swedish Foreign Minister, was yesterday assaulted by an unknown man and stabbed multiple times in the arms and the chest. She was brought to the Karolinska Hospitalet in Solna for intensive care with heavy internal bleeding and impacted liver. Ten minutes ago her death was announced.

Anna Lindh had no bodyguards, partly due to the swedish tradition of open debate, and partly because the secutity police (SÄPO) did not percieve "a clear threat".

September 11th once again claims its victims.

Thats bad. But I do think the idea of approachable members of government is a neat one, provided this sort of thing doesn't happen all the time.

My sympathises, Eleas and Faram. This was not good news.

This sort of thing is an anomaly in this part of the world, Frank. This came right out of the blue, nobody could expect it. Things might change somewhat in Swden after this, though. Just for comparison, when you look at Finland, our president typically has a single bodyguard when on private outings in public, the prime minister gets one at State Security Police discretion (iirc) and the rest don't get a single one. The last time there was a political murder here was when the interior minister was shot at his doorstep. In 1922, and that was just two years after the civil war and the same year that the last war prisoners were given amnesty, to give you some reference to the political climate of the time.

Typically, a bodyguard is totally unnecessary and politically motivated assaults happen maybe once every ten years or more rarely, and murder attempts even less often.

5:29AM September 11th, 2003 Anna Lindh, Swedish foreign minister died from the wounds suffered the day before. She was stabbed in a shopping mall in central Stockholm by a lone man who remains at large.

She leaves a husband and two children. She was 46 years old.

She was one of Sweden's most respected politicians, domestically as well as internationally. She was the most likely candidate to replace Göran Persson as the head of the Social Democratic Party, and quite likely, as Swedens minister of State.

She was a decent politician, and those are hard enough to find.

I mourn her.

She had no bodyguards with her at the time, and she shouldnt have needed any. The worst thing that's happened here lately is people throwing cakes.

I hope politicians will keep on walking around in the open rather than hiding behind bodyguards and bullet-proof glass.

No one is sure, but she was one of the major supporters for the € (euro) election now on sunday.

There is talk about canceling the election and move it to some later date.

All debates about the euro have ceased and all planned apperances is canceled.

Minister of state Göran Persson just announced that vote will be held as scheduled and the result will be respected. All party leaders have agreed to this. Furthermore, all further campaigning will be cancelled (not certain if this is only for the Yes-movement). Tomorrow's televised debate will still be aired, however.

Last night when she was still undergoing surgery they said her condition was improving and that her wounds were not life threatening...

I'm just browasing through the website of the daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, and it says that the Stockholm police believe that the murder was pre-planned.

Completely true. There was also "no obvious threat" involved according to SÄPO, and thus he had no bodyguards either. Olof Palme was also perhaps the best PM we ever had.

My friend thinks that it might have been a nazi who commited the murder (they don't like € and they often wear "camouflage jackets"), but I don't know. Anyone can be a victim of random violence. Sad but true.

if it was an anti euro nazi, then it wasn't a random act of violence, it was a case of someone murdering for their beliefs. That, my friend, is far scarier than random violence.
