I can't say that I really see a problem with having a levy on blank audio CDs. The industry gets their cut, it's still cheap for the consumer, everyone (should) be happy.

Well, it is the Recording Industry Association of America, not the Recording Industry Association of Canada. If they want to gouge prices, they should stick true to their name and only screw over American fans.

I suppose that means we in the US could, in theory, start copying the crap out of material by Canadian artists who don't have contracts with American record companies? :) :?

Hm....I'm in a canadian music mood...so I think this might be an appropriate tune for this, just swap out the whitehouse for the RIAA's headquarters ;)
Oh, come back, proud Canadians
To before you had TV,
No hockey night in Canada,
There was no CBC (Oh, my God!).
In 1812, Madison was mad,
He was the president, you know
Well, he thought he?d tell the British where they ought to go
He thought he?d invade Canada,
He thought that he was tough
Instead we went to Washington....
And burned down all his stuff!
And the White House burned, burned, burned,
And we?re the one?s that did it!
It burned, burned, burned,
While the president ran and cried.
It burned, burned, burned,
And things were very historical.
And the Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies
Waa waa waah!
In the War of 1812!
Now some hillbillies from Kentucky,
Dressed in green and red,
Left home to fight in Canada,
But they returned home dead
It?s the only war the Yankees lost, except for Vietnam
And also the Alamo... and the Bay of... ham.
The loser was America,
The winner was ourselves,
So join right in and gloat about the War of 1812
And the White House burned, burned, burned,
And we?re the one?s that did it!
It burned, burned, burned,
While the president ran and cried.
It burned, burned, burned,
And things were very historical.
And the Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies
Waa waa waah!
In the War of 1812!
In 1812, we were just sittin? around,
Mindin? our own business, puttin? crops into the ground.
We heard the soldiers coming and we didn?t like that sound.
So we took a boat to Washington and burned it to the ground.
Oh... we... fired our guns, but the Yankees kept-a coming,
There wasn?t quite as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and the Yankees started running,
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico, oh, oh....
They ran through the snow and they ran through the forest,
They ran through the bushes where the beavers wouldn?t go.
They ran so fast, they forgot to take their culture,
Back to America, and Gulf and Texaco
So, if you go to Washington, its buildings clean and nice,
Bring a pack of matches, and we?ll burn the White House twice!
And the White House burned, burned, burned,
But the Americans won?t admit it
It burned, burned, burned,
It burned and burned and burned
It burned, burned, burned,
Now, I bet that made them mad
And the Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies
Waa waa waah!
In the War of 1812!

That is possibly illegal under current US laws. Copyrights are respected from country to country. It just happens to be Canadian law allows for free exchange of said material in certain cirtumstances.

Thanks to Mike "Head of the Toronto board of tourism" Wong, I have long wanted to visit Canada, and have thought that living there would be pretty nice. Now I know it would be.

Canadians are exempted because we pay a tariff on blank CD-Rs and certain other pieces of equipment. In essence, we've already paid a fine for private copying, so we can't be prosecuted for it again. Since you haven't paid this tariff, you are not exempted. Copyright violations are assessed in the country where they are committed, not the country where the artist lives.

Thats quite correct,Whats even better is when I went into future shop this morning to buy a 50 stack of cd-r's the levy wasn't there.(Futureshop and other major stores are boycotting the RIAA's lameness....by not charging the levy.:))

The levies sound good. And putting levies on stuff like MP3 CD players and CD-Burners could ensure more compensation for the recording industry and the artists.

And even if the RIAA wins here, Canada would then field huge file-sharing.

So RIAA would be back to square one, except it then can't do a thing about it.

We put tariffs on CD-Rs? I do love American hypocrisy on free trade.

No, the USA does not put tariffs on CD-Rs. Canada's government does, but it's not a trade issue because it doesn't matter where they're made. The tariff even applies if they're made in Canada; it's basically a tax to compensate the music industry for the projected effects of copying. However, it also means that we would be penalized twice if we were to be charged with private copying, so we're allowed to make private copies.

Ah.

Brain fart. A tariff put on CD-Rs exported to the U.S. from Canada would actually be kind of illegal. :D

Maybe so, but a million people downloading songs isn't giving the industry a million peoples worth of song CD tariffs. Even so, the money from tariffs is shit compared to what they would be making. not only is the tarrif under a dollar for something that would have sold for >15, but the CD holds hundreds of MP3s as opposed to a dozen! Then again, I suspect Canadian record labels are actual services to provide the artist with a way to get content to consumers not owners-of-all-that-the-artist-makes.

Bah! I will turn the Isle of Arran into an unpenetrable fortress complete with various fine cheeses, wines and mead. All that is needed to survive any blockade! ;)

Also, didnt the Audio Home Recording Act 1992 in the US mean they pay a tarrif on blank CD's too?
