You mean the secular holiday version with X-mas trees and presents?

Or

The dull and tedious religous holiday?

The first I like. Seeing the extended family, some fun with close family, and a chance to exchange gifts. (And yes I do actually enjoy giving gifts along with getting them). Oh and good holiday desert/snack food.

The second I really don't care about anymore.

It's good, as it gives a reason for people to act a little more friendly and polite. At least in some part of the year, people feel like being giving and more friendly.

I can't stand either version.

One is crass commercialisation that preys upon peoples feelings of inadequacy and guilt.

The other celebrates the most violent and obnoxious religion the world has seen.

See if your Atheist you free from all Comceralised Activities but people still feel they don't want you left out but YOUR exused from having to give back :D

IE I typicaly rake in $300-$1000 worth of free merchandize during Xmas

Most of which I donate of course given the people who give me these things know as much about my intrestes as Priesto does about Logic

christmas is ok. you get presents, good food and after all the family thing i usually go out with friends and get drunk. one annoying point about christmas is getting presents. it´s really damn hard to find something. especially for girlfriends... argh. finding presents for girlfriends, that´s a point i need to mention in the "what bugs you" thread.

I enjoy the secular Holiday. My Mom really gets into the whole thing.

I am begining to hate the whole shopping for presents thing though. I just have a lot more trouble finding the right things for people anymore. :?

Christmas is good.

Now, you'll point out unabashed marketing, commercialization, religious annoyance, etc. But there is nothing about that you need to incorporate in your holiday.

Basically, the entire western world concedes that everybody takes a few days off, visits family, and has some R&R. What you do with that R&R (read: how guilted you feel into gift-giving and traditionalism) is up to you. But the idea of any bulk holiday is good. Just because some people overexert themselves in following traditional Christmas behaviour and subsequently fail to enjoy the holiday season doesn't mean it's a bad holiday.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Christmas is generally fun. Whether or not you want to take part in the religious side of things is up to you, but surely everyone likes to sing the 12 days of Christmas, and eat lots of high-fat and sugar foods?

Anyone for 12 days of Christmas?

Anyone?

ANYONE???

Xmas or Yule is fun as a holiday, the point is to relax and enjoy. Spend time with people you want to, and enjoy their company. The holidays get tedious only when you are forced to celebrate in someones small view of what one does to celebrate. Being made to party sucks, but if you take the time to celebrate the way you want, you'll have a great time.

Try celebrating festivus. It is a much more fulfilling holiday.

Yes, I do like Christmas. You see, 363 days a year, my house is a noisy hell-hole. During Christmas and Thanksgiving, however, the family gets together, and we just relax. It's an excuse to get presents, eat a lot, make hot chocolate, and light a fire in the fireplace. In my opinion, we need more holidays like that.

As for the religous holiday, I don't mind. The mass is just an hour and a half out of my day, and when you wake up, you have to wait until everyone is ready.

And, it's just a merry time of year, and you get off from school/work.

I don't hate Christmas. In fact, I kind of like the December break. I do not believe that Christ was born then (it was just a convenient date taken from an existing Roman holiday), and I do not like its comercialization, but I don't mind the holiday itself, and I even celebrate it with a tree and presents for everyone. It's kind of a good time to tell all your friends that you care about them.
