Looks like there is no escape from Izabel

Post by fgalkin »

I've just noticed that the following letter has been slipped under my apartment door.
Although we are hearing conflicting reports about the hurricane’s strength and projected locations for landfall, it is best we are all prepared for the potential of an emergency..

In the event that the hurricane hits us very hard and winds exceed 75 mph, we will be closing all plaza entrance doors to all three towers. For safety, the plaza will be closed as well. Entrance to the building will be through the lower mall entrance on Boulevard East or through the garage only. Staff will be on hand at the lower mall entrance to assist residents, if necessary. If you require assistance in the garage with groceries and/or packages, please tell the garage attendant who will then call appropriate staff to meet and assist you at your location.

If winds are excessive, it may become necessary to shut the elevators down for safety. Should there be an emergency, we will be able to re-activate an elevator as needed. Please contact the concierge and we will activate an elevator for the emergency, if it’s safe to do so.

If you have a terrace, it is imperative that EVERYTHING be taken off the terrace by Wednesday at noon. No exceptions will be made.

During an emergency, the threat of a power outage is always imminent. As you know, we are looking to upgrade our emergency lighting, but for now, be advised that our emergency lights are “evacuation lights”. This means that they will stay on for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours after a black out and will fade as the battery is expanded.

It is strongly recommended that you plan ahead for the emergency by ensuring that you have a flashlight, fresh batteries, a battery operated radio, and three day supply of food and water for you and your family. Stay away from windows. Do not use your terraces. Charge your cell phone batteries or purchase a charger that can operate from your auto. If you have an old fashioned “rotary” or “princess” type (non-electrical) telephone, it will most likely work if plugged into your phone outlet. The use of candles is discouraged due to the fire hazard that the candles pose. If you must use candles, please keep them away from all other objects and please realize that the high winds may create drafts that you are not used to. Extinguish candles before going to sleep. Do not venture into flooded areas until you have been advised that there is no shock hazard.

Rest assured that Management has taken all possible precautions to ensure the safety of our residents. Additional staff will be on hand for assistance and clean up if needed. We ask only for your patience while we deal with the issues posed by the hurricane.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation.
Shit. Walking to the 36th floor AGAIN.

Have a very nice day.

Yeah, you guys could be in for some rough weather. If Isabel follows the latest projected path -- and the models have been quite accurate with this one -- it won't be a hurricane any longer, but will still be a potent low pressure system by the time the main storm body reaches the NYC area.

As well, there will be a strong high pressure system settling in over the nothern New England area on Thursday creating a strong pressure gradient in the upper NE, so expect some pretty serious winds over the next few days. Flooding could also be a problem, but that will most likely be north and west of the city proper, esp upstate.

I would guess that for you guys in and around NYC, Isabel will be more of a giant hassle than an emergency, but this is a strong storm, and could pose some serious problems so it wouldn't hurt to have some batteries and such on hand, just in case.

General NYC weather info with zip code search for any specific area.

Weather info for the whole upper east coast with clickable maps.

Bah, now I have to wait for Hurricane Madison :P

Thank you Weatherman. Fortunately, it looks like it'll skim Long Island and we might wind up with only some heavy rain.

Ahh, yes but they are saying hurricane force winds extend out to a 175 mile radius from the center and tropical strom force winds extend out to a 275 mile radius from the center. you can be 275 miles from landfall and still lose power etc... just hope it doesn;t move from it's projected target of Shep's house in Maryland.

I'll try to keep you updated as the storm moves through my area.

Besides Wilkens, Shep, RedImp, and myself, is there anyone else in the area of possible hurricane strenth winds?

It'll probably about turn and hightail it out of there at the last minute. A week later and people cleaning up Liverpool after a hurricane hit it will be the news. :P

I'm going to be getting it once it's done in Virginia, which of course has conflicting reports. Wish me luck.

It's a good thing that the hurricane is on the other side of the Appalachian mountains, so I'm only going to probably get rain. :)

I mean sure I wouldn't mind laughing at seeing a giant carboard Panzer flying through the air BUT since I'm on a third floor apartment with BIG windows I'd rather not have 75+ MPH winds hitting me.

Anyway what I'm REALLY praying is that this sucker doesnt' just curve around Hatteras and take a trek up the hesapeake because all that warm water will help sustain the hurricane's organization a lot longer than a conventional landfall.

Up here, 30 miles inland in New Jersey, winds of 60 miles an hour maximum are expected. What worries me is the trees falling down, blocking roads and destroying houses.

Sorry Z! i was just kidding. you hang in there. If you make it through the brunt of the storm intact, hurricanes can be a fun adventure. you really get to know your neighbors during something like that. I've been through two and it is nice how everyone pulls together. sharing gas, sharing a generator, helping each other out. Just make sure you have plenty of the 3 B's on hand. Books, batteries and beer.

Fun stuff: I was told today at work (around 2pm, I think) that we have off tomorrow and Friday because they're shutting the building down. I still get paid and all; I just get to stay home. Huzzah!! :D

So, I'm going to go upstairs, go to bed, and then SLEEP IN tomorrow!!! YAY!!
