Was he spying for Syria? Or perhaps Saudi Arabia? (One has to wonder, considering the articles long espousing the extensive Saudi connections with both State Department and military--could we be finally cracking down?) This is at once both heartening and ominous; this man was a commissioned officer and the fact that he had access to the prisoners at Gitmo for months is not good, not good at all.

It may or may not be as serious as you think- have you heard of the Pasko case in Russia? A former Russian naval officer (IIRC) turned journalist was brought up on charges of treason for providing information about the Russian Pacific Fleet's nuclear waste etc practices to Japanese media. It may be the same here- but I'd say your interpretation is more likely.

Such things tend to be inevitable, look at he problems the brits had with the Caimbridge spy ring etc etc. If you recruit from a large group of people you must get the odd one or two who do not agree with the broad aspects of things that most people do.
