Well, it shows extreme public acceptance of GPS if they use it for such a damned mundane task.

It's still fairly stupid. It's not like you can't tell where you are by just looking quickly at the course map :P

Unless the course is a 4 square km field of homogenous grass with no features whatsoever

What about the Ascension island golf course; a huge mass of homogenous mud. ;)

National Geographic had an amusing photo of a golf course in the desert that is northern Chile. While not completely featureless, the green is marked by used motor oil poured onto the sand, water obstacles are painted blue rocks and there are absolutely no plants of any form.

And tourists pay to play on it.

Might be better to use the GPS to be able to track the ball. Or just having a tracking device embedded in the ball. No more lost balls.

Well in a tiny bit of defense if you have coordinates on pin placement it will allow you to get your exact distances. That in turn is critical to club selection adn the mental part of the swing. Is it worth it? Not for me, but then I'm a 50 handicapper.

The use of GPS is actualy rather inteligent. It is attached to club carts. You drive up to the ball and state which hole you are on. It then informs you how far you have to the green.

Isn't guessing range part of the game?

Yes but why work harder at the game (its not like the guys using this are PGA players) when your real purpose is to go out and have a fun 3.5 hours drinking beer with some buddies.

And use GPS for what else? If you know where you are, why not find other fun uses for otherwise useless products?

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
