Newsweek Magazine changing gears?
During the buildup to the Iraq War, Newsweek moved not-so-subtly to the right, with some of its columnists virtually fawning over the Bush Administration's inerrant wisdom.
Recently, however, they've been changing gears, and with a pair of articles like What $87 Billion Buys and Pride and Prejudices (The French were right), they appear to have discarded whatever patriotic self-censorship they had dallied with earlier in the year.
Are there any other major magazines and media sources which have made about-faces like this?

Time Magazine has made somewhat tentative steps in that direction, in my view- but it's still in apologetic "what will Bush do now?" tones.

Hasn't Newsweek always been somewhat conservative politically??Darth Wong wrote:During the buildup to the Iraq War, Newsweek moved not-so-subtly to the right, with some of its columnists virtually fawning over the Bush Administration's inerrant wisdom.

With George Will on staff, that's a given. But they moved very noticeably farther right during the buildup to the Iraq war.Simon H.Johansen wrote:Hasn't Newsweek always been somewhat conservative politically??

From the end of one of the articles talking about the reasons for invading Iraq.
Because he's right.
It was meant to inspire awe in the Arab and Muslim world, as former CIA operative Marc Reuel Gerecht and others insisted it should be. And in that it truly has failed. Every day we look weaker. And the worst news of all it that it’s not because of what was done to us by our enemies but because of what we’ve done to ourselves.
Because he's right.

The media tells people what they think they'll want to hear, Newsweek is just changing with the political wind to keep sales up.

They weren't really any farther to the right. They were just more open about it during the build up to the war.Darth Wong wrote:With George Will on staff, that's a given. Either that, or they muzzled "unpatriotic" voices of dissent for the sake of national solidarity. There was an awful lot of social and political pressure at the time to conform to the party line.Stormbringer wrote:They weren't really any farther to the right.
