sw d20

amusing moment today.

I gm a sw d20 game, lvl 1-3. it had reached a key point in the game, where they were going to stop a major shipment of arms going to terrorists. knowing the group as I did, I figured they would steal as much as possible after taking out the hovercraft caravan, so I had cops come by within a few minutes. they would turn over the goods, and go onto the next scenario, a duel with a sith spirit.

they did in fact take out the caravan, but as the cops were arriving, the group's engineer fixed the main ship, and drove off with 2 million credits worth of weapons. he promptly sold it to jabba the hutt, and their small firespray now qualifies as light cruiser. they have a safe house ready to handle an invasion by darth maul himself, and enough caches of weapons, credits, and alternate identidies the illuminati themselves couldnt keep up with them.

they are now talking about raiding a military compound, looting the armoury, and starting a pirate fleet.

Im rather enjoying it - 2 mil is small, sw scale, and they are rather inventive with it.

just cuz Im bored, Ill give more details.

they got a firespray ship as payment for eliminating the terrorists, which had engine trouble. they fixed the engines, rolling so well the hyperdrive does 30% faster. they also traded the tractor beam and small lasers for twin turbolasers and a computer system to run it.

then jabba offered to upgrade it for their collection of ewebs (making half a million credits profit; I didnt tell them that), so they got the tractor beam back, the small lasers, another set of turbolasers, twin proton torpedo tubes, an advanced battle computer to work it all, 10% faster sublight engines, 400% faster hyperdrive, and its all hidden. it would qualify as a light cruiser, but scans only report it as a typical firespray.

they also have 2 other transponder codes for it, just in case, secret compartments holding several dozen blasters and explosives, seperate IDs for all of them, *another* set of IDs with 100k credits left to each in a swiss bank account in case of an 'oh hell, everyone hates us' moment. most of their weapons are personalized masterwork +3, as well as their armor, and they have a private citadel on courscant with a top of the line medbay, repair and landing dock, 2 droideka and 2 turbolasers watching the entrances, assorted reloads on weapons, explosives, and torpedoes, and the entire placed is rigged to detonate. it has durasteel walls so the explosion wont hurt the rest of the building, and doesnt register on any building plans. its built in an automated section of coruscant, so them being seen is very unlikely.

ah, paranoid gamers are fun to work with.

They Need chow yun-fat sunglasses

I still remember the pirate/slaver group that was moving around with an Old republic Dreadnaught. I brought it down with a shipment of Proton Torps, and an Emergancy Jettison system.

Rigged the Torps to home in a few seconds after jettison. Launched the whole mass of them out the aft of the smuggler's frieghter, and brought down the dreadnaught.

In another sequence I threatened to blow up the whole of the pirate's group and my self and got a bunch of pirates to surrender to me.

Another fun invention of my bouty hunter was a small repulsor device fitted into his armour that launched out a pair of hold out blasters caught a few people by supprise too.

Wow... and here I thought I was just playing with a wierd group. We had one guy who had the walls and ceiling of his apartment lined with C-4 in a Cyberpunk game.

I gave up on it: I figured out quick that when the Plot Wagon rolls through, you either hop onboard or get run over.

ah fuck, I wrote a page, and it was lost in the reboot.

-rewrites-

Im not worried bout game balance as of yet, cuz they havent even got past cellular stage in their world size pond - one ship and a few blasters is meaningless in a star wars galaxy, even if its a large jump up for them. I havent given them a sun crusher, like I did when I first started gaming. :D

the next scenario is a one evening thing, wrote for the last gaming night I have before shipping out. they went shopping instead, so Ill use it when I get back, as a getting used to d20 system again thing. it involves a dark side spirit who has shacked up in a senator's family mausoluem. I used the dark side book heavily, with a base line of the baldur's gate catacombs. secret passages, traps, hidden loot, ghouls, zombies, and a nasty criter running it all. I expect it to be fun.

open plot lines following that - jabba is using the ewebs to push durga off tatooine entirely, and may want to call them for their services once again. durga will possibly want revenge on the party. the party of course plans to steal the ewebs back, possibly selling them to a different cirme lord, and jabba will not be pleased. Ill need to review his syndicate powers, cuz it will get fun.

the terrorist convoy they broke up was a quiet working together between trade federation and black sun, or more techniclaly, subsidaries of both. trade federation doesnt like the party, as Ive been using them as incompetent villians fo rthe entire campaign. the black sun liuetenenant who was involved in this has taken a fall, and will want revenge. the one who replaced will want the characters for certain actions, not to mention finishing off his rival and heading up the chain of command. and of course, once you work for black sun, you can never leave.

darling palpatine is working on eliminating a few of the more inquisitive jedi, and he is using a strand of his political powers to frame and convict them. the party will be used as cats paw, with orders and evidence supporting them in their execution, the innocent jedi's protests agaisnt it. I think it will be a fun campaign, that, with the party eventually abadoning republican authority entirely - a jedi is in the party, and he may think soemthing is up. perhaps he finds palpatine is evil - which would make the party hunted. as a player is usually absent, Ill have him kidnapped, cuz I want to use the interrogater droids - that will reveal the safe house, and go for the criminal game we seem to be heading into.

Im reading the han solo trilogy at the moment, and so want to involve pirates, raiders, smuggling, convert war, and of course spice for the darlings. its quite possible they become crime lords in their own right, with a small fleet, just as the clone wars start up.

my hope is the eventual evolution where they can do a double-triple cross in one evening. :D

Im told the black sun is currently shattered, which makes their divisional politics much fun. I also am toying with getting the katana fleet involved somehow.

Im thinking, they'll reposess a splinter group of the black sun, some of durga's corporation, a good number of pirates and smugglers, and prolly some corrupt cor sec officials, when the clone wars start.

at which point they'll grab legitmate groups as well.

so Im reading han solo trilogy, and Im getting a kind of 'eh?' moment. the scale is rather paltry, to say the least. the hutts giving a 'major' fine which causes one of their own to betray them costing 1 million credits? upgrading a pirate fleet for 55k? one of the largest pirate fleets in the glaxy - a corellian corvette and a dozen y wings? o_O

using this scale, and my planned explansion for my players, they'll be grand moffs if they hold one planet and ship dock. that willl give them a profit of 5 mil a month, which I consider adequate for 6th level characters in the sw campaign. in dnd, theyd have a henchmen and some magic items. so in starwars, a million times bigger, they have a planet and some capital cruisers. :D

Just because the scale CAN get big is no reason it HAS to get big. Don't forget to cause them problems. Having money means that you have something that other people want.

I'd say 6th Level Star Wars, they have a slightly modified ship, some tuned/custom equipment, and some droids/mercs/shiphands. Obviously you can up the scale a bit if you want, but giving them Strike Cruisers could end up really making the game difficult to manage. Don't forget, the more power they have, the more noticable they are. If they start raising hell, they're going to have people come after them, eventually Jedi (assuming Old Republic).

Even in Star Wars, owning (governing) a planet is a huge responsibility. Han Solo is listed as a total of what, 14th level or something in ANH? He certainly doesn't have a planet, or a fleet of ships at his beck and call. ;)

sure, but xizor, vader, and palpy did. it all depends on what you put the levels into.

I am planning them to have a shadow war with the republic (not worthy of a stand up fight by any means) in an alliance with the black sun. its the way the game is going. high stakes, big treasure troves, and lots of fun. Im keeping the realism to a minimum; its star wars ;). the party always wins.

Im not doing monty haul tho. even with a system of their own, they are very small fishes. and, as stated in this thread, they'll be dueling the hutts, black sun, corpsec, and the republic. they want to develop a pirate fleet, and Im not against it. sw is epic, and it wont affect game balance in the least. one front line cruiser could clear them all out anyway

basically, they'll capture shards of the shattered black sun and the losing hutts, and have a little check list. ok, spy network, costs a million a month, +20 to galaxy knowledge. city, produces 1.2 mil a month. nothing specific, just aquire it and it gives you income when your not looking. like vice city, I expect.

then they can use the credits and fleet to start the brotherhood of pirates, or similar. level 15, they'll be major crimelords skimming between xizor, dooku, and palpy.

How much work do you want to put in if you let them have a planet they will want to trick it out like they have their lair done so they will ask you all sorts of questions and you will have to have answers. I like to keep things smallish because otherwise it becomes a game of economics and egos which I find to be boring.

woah. need some commas there dude.

I enjoy creating worlds. when they need the details, theyll mention it, and Ill sketch it. my campaign is very loose - leave a dozen plot lines, go where they go, and develop the ones they miss. then interact with the new ones.

Nothing personal, but this paragraph made me want to puke. What the hell kind of Star Wars campaign are you running that features a dungeon romp with "loot" and undead?

and, zombies *are* in the dark side source book.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, and I guess I understand if it's a silly kind of "won't see you guys again for a while" scenario. Still, whatever sourcebook features zombies should be set on fire along with its author.

Yeah, the spirit-thing is a really messed up idea, but I didn't want to say anything at first. Considering how much KJA gets SW wrong, I wouldn't be too surprised it it comes from his stuff. Then again I don't really trust WotC's rendition of SWRPG in general. I know for a fact you wouldn't find that kind of stuff in WEG's D6 booklets, no sir. :P

Then again, I knew two guys in highschool who did a 'there of the regular people are missing so let's just do something wierd with new weird characters' sort of adventure, where they raided a monster brothel where these Dwarves in purple pimp hats and pimp coats sat around on couches with their axes and maces at their sides, while watching TV. It was messed up in more ways than that, I'm sure I've mentioned it before.

How low has SWRPG fallen after WEG fell?

Rather than using whatever skills you use and study, you're stuck with 3rd edition-esque classes (but not as cool or varied as D&D's), limited skills, and 'feats'. Also it's stuck with hitpoints and (I'm assuming) armor with +2 and +3 bonus point stuff.
