It's like a biography in an unorthodox form. I don't think it's all that strange; it doesn't have that gian Kim-Il robot from that old Onin article, right? :P
Don't hate; appreciate!

It's a Japanese translation of a South Korean manga, Shin, which portrays the adult Kim as a murderous despot.

Did you even read the entire thing?

Well, it was originally published in South Korea in 1999 (it has since been banned), and the Japanese translation went on sale on 4 August.

It'd be a miracle if there was already an English version...

Why was it banned? I thought that they would want anti-NK setiment in their country.

"Young Japanese know next to nothing about Kim Jong-Il's personality," said Lee Young-Hwa, a third-generation Japanese Korean and professor of economics specialising in North Korea at Kansai University in Osaka, who insisted that "all incidents portrayed in the manga are true."

He said the Japanese media is to blame with its fixation on "missile issues, kidnappings and the 'yorokobigumi'," -- the beautiful cheerleaders who accompany North Korean sports teams on their trips abroad -- as well as Kim's alleged sexual depravity.
Sorry, I just couldn't help focusing on this.

The South Korean president was trying to lower the tension between the two countries. When your neighbour happens to be North Korea, which occasionally attacks your soldiers and patrol vessels, it's not very beneficial to have a popular comic that depicts the NK leader as "bloodthirsty despot, etc." (which Kim Jong II no doubt is).

That said, I'd like to read Kim Jong-Il manga.

so how is your rationalization of censorship in this case different from Americans banning socialist literature in the 1950's? Sorry, but i don't buy this 'ends justify the means" horeshit. A free society must never ban political literature, even literature that seems so trivial.

We get those kinds of bans all the time and they are knowingly never enforced. It's just a 'formal' ban to keep him from lobbing nukes down our throats.
