Why? Just accept it and fucking survive, thats whats important, who cares if the US is daring them?Sea Skimmer wrote:Accepting a massive military inferiority compared to the capitalist powers would be simply unacceptable.
Do like China instead, they're hardly the top dog, but if they bide their time they might very well become just that.

I don't mean to be stereotypical, but Russian leadership tended to be paranoid and prideful. His Divine Shadow wrote:Why? They were also claiming that if Iraq had taken deliverey of a dozen or two Mig-31s that they claim was planed and blocked by the US, the US would not have dared to attack it as their air force would have been up against very badass competition, all the cruise missiles would have been shot down e.t.c.CelesKnight wrote:Interesting observation. EDIT.
Ah here it is
Its highly entertaining fictionIf the Iraqi army had several regiments of MiG-31 jets, it is not ruled out that there would be absolutely no war. No aircraft carrier or a bomber plane of the US army would venture to approach the Iraqi border on account of a possibility to be destroyed. The majority of missiles that the US forces launched from their cruisers and planes would also be shot with those battle planes. Sergey Permyakov, a member of the Perm Motors- Board of Directors said:
....
feel very anxious when I watch news reports about the war. It is painful for me to see the Iraqi people so helpless. However, the anxiety goes by, when I hear MiG-31 flying somewhere nearby. I feel calmer, when I think that the Russian army has modern defense technology. However, what can we oppose to those, who will have a wish to defend us and our different point of view regarding the world order?
?It becomes obvious today that the euphoria of eternal friendship with the American nation that developed in Russia during Boris Yeltsin-s era has to give way to sober pragmatism and calculation in all international affairs. Those people, who deal with it, have to deal with it.¦
Love those Russians.
The presence of 12-24 MiG-31s would've resulted in several more Coalition air losses, and more in that for cruise missile losses. To go from that to no war is hype the likes of which I can't believe ...
It's patent nonsense that the MiG-31 was offered to Iraq- the Soviet Union was still around remember and they were very cagey about giving away anything more than 'export-designate' models- MiG-23s and MiG-29s, for the most part, though MiG-25s were exported as well, I'll grant. They wouldn't even give them to China (who'd want to, those reverse engineering no-originality wankers), and there's no way in hell you could train up Iraqi pilots and technicians to deal with the MiG-31 system in such a small time frame. It's way too complicated.

The MiG-25 really was just an expensive and not very useful toy for everyone who bought the interceptor. And of course, the only started doing that after the US had taken one apart..Vympel wrote: It's patent nonsense that the MiG-31 was offered to Iraq- the Soviet Union was still around remember and they were very cagey about giving away anything more than 'export-designate' models- MiG-23s and MiG-29s, for the most part, though MiG-25s were exported as well, I'll grant.
