Many scientists believe that a weather phenomenon known as plasma vortex creates crop circles. Plasma vortexes are based on ball lighting which themselves are a mysterious phenomena so little is known about them.
I'm just reluctant to believe this theory because "plasma vortex" sounds like a superweapon-of-the-week from Star Trek.

Considering that they came to a planet whose surface is covered with a substance lethal to them and which is inhabited by a species with reasonably advanced weaponry naked and unarmed, I'd say logic has left the building a long time ago.

God, that movie sucked.

Actualy it reminds me of the 'Quantum Vortext' unleashed by the Talons in Earth : Final Conflict.

Anyway the coolness factor is irrelavent in science. Just because it sounds Star Trek does not mean it can not be true.

They would burn the crops.
In theory computer simulations have shown that plasma vortexes can exist and create crop circles. However to this day no one has observed a plasma vortex making a crop circle.
I'd like to see this "theory".

I watched it on discovery channel. Since I am a mere school student and you are an accomplished engineer you are way more qualified than I am. So if you think this theory is bogus than it may realy be so.

Hrmm... I seem to be receiving a message from the aliens now! They seem to be saying... uh... "Look stupids, we've got the technology to cheat relativity and build interstellar starships. If we wanted to talk to you, we'd use the radio or land on the White House lawn, not make patterns in wheat. And no, they aren't messages left behind for our benefit either, since we mastered answering machine technology millenia ago. Stupids."

The funny thing is that when they were making the movie Signs, they made dozens of crop circles around the world as a promotion for the movie, including in corn, which is notoriously hard to bend.

Also, there was a person in my area who made a giant Larry King crop circle in his field. It took a bit of planning, but the man did it with two other people in under three days and it was a nice portrait too.

I wonder if they've ever tested for mold or fungus on these "unexplained" crop circles. Fungi can grow very fast, and spreading in a circular pattern wouldn't exactly be a stretch, either.

Crop circles are too complex for fungi.

Complex "circles" are man made, even the most hardened UFOlogists espouse this.
The ones I'm talking about are the purely circular variety, with seemingly bent plant stems.

The simple circle ones are supposedly duplicatable via magnetic fields and ball lightning. About the only thing pointing to more than those two guys would be the earlier ones(Like it or not, crop circles have a place in mythology), but they clearly aren't aliens.

They're the Elves, coming to take over. :D

So you figure that "two guys work fairly quickly at night, taking several hours to make a crop circle using methods which have been documented and demonstrated" is somehow less reasonable than "aliens violate the known laws of physics, travel here from a distant star system at FTL, and have nothing better to do after that stupendous accomplishment than to make funny patterns in farmers' fields"?

Shinova.
You now have an oportuninty to get some empathy for, (Gasp) The Fundies!
Do you now realise how they feel, when talking to an atheist! You follow the logic, but can't we quite get all the way home.
You are presenting your own wall of ignorance, and using conclusion driven logic.
Don't be so harsh on them in the future, remembering now.
They are just as sure as YOU are.
You are just as wrong as they are.
The way you dismissed the pranksters, was classic fundie logic.

Aliens, (like God, not even PROVED to exsist)) are more believable than humans with mischief on their minds.(Natural phenomina)

You don't even have ignorance as your excuse, as you dismissed the supernatural for the improbable.
How do you rationalise the human factor? Pranksters, on film, doing said acts. Can you visualise these folks at home, reading your posts, and rolling their eyes? Ha Ha! Fooled that guy!
Dude, I KNOW one person who did this. Those whacky engineering students at Cal Poly Pomona! Bright, creative, educated, juvinile minds!

Do you even SEE the delicious irony here?
Very much like an Astrology thread, with it's inevitable defenders.
Do pranksters not exsist in your world?

As long as it doesn't interfere with your sex life, peace of mind, sleeping habits, digestion, or income, it isn't worth stressing about.

Just remember this thread, when next you speak with a fundie.
If you laugh I have made my point.
Hmmmmmm.

Logic tells us that alien life exists. It is unlikely that life on earth was an isolated event. As for God there is no doubt he exists.
