Lucas: LIAR!!!

Post by Lord Poe »

Lately, Lucas has said he "never intended" to make 9 SW movies.

http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,4132,00.html
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lucas says he never intended to make nine Star Wars movies--a surprise to many of the series' hardcore fans, who remember the filmmaker envisioning a nine-part series when the original Star Wars came out in 1977.

"When you see it in six parts, you'll understand," Lucas tells the magazine. "It really ends at part six."
However, I was going through my old magazines today, and found a 1988 Starlog Q&A with Lucas, which refutes this:
STARLOG: Will you return to the Star Wars universe?

LUCAS: Hopefully, I will someday be doing the next three Star Wars, but I'm not sure when. The next three would take place 20 or 30 years before the films they're celebrating today. I'll do the first trilogy first. There are nine [films] floating around there somewhere. I'll guarantee that the first three are pretty much organized in my head, but the other three are kind of out there somewhere.
And later in the interview:
STARLOG: Why didn't you give Luke a girl?

LUCAS: You haven't seen the last three yet.

"Never intended" is different than changing one's mind. Lucas is outright lying.

Those of us who were around when Star Wars was around (before it was ANH) remember many interviews both in print and otherwise where it was fairly common knowledge that nine movies were planned.

I've always known that GL was rewriting history. What always irked me were the EU Inquisition types that were quick to hop on that bandwagon and say "Bullshit, GL never said 9 movies" to those of us that damn well remembered what was happening and being said back in the 70's.

It's not exactly a new thing. In fact it's painfully obvious he intended more films and that they were going to take a much different direction than they did.

I mean look at the near incestous relationship between Luke and Leia.

He was thinking about making nine films, yes, but I don't think he ever had any material for the "Sequel" trilogy done. I think it was just a sort of pipe dream. It did, however, seem that he had the prequel trilogy ready from the start.

He has said recently that he will not, and would rather move on and make different kinds of films.

I for one hope there will never be anymore SW films after Episode III.

Well if he does make another three, he will need to include Mara Jade, or just having a date, because the entire NJO would be thrown to trash

When i finally got on the internet in 2000, when i first went to theforce.net i remember reading that Episode 7 was going to be relesed in 2008 in that timeline thing, the very next time i went it said never to be just like it had for Episodes 8-9 on my first visit.

Anyways if Lucas or somebody else (Rick McCullem???) does make the "new" trilogy they wouldnt have to trash the EU or NJO mainly because they can just make the movie in line with real life years, i mean its now been 26 years since ANH came out in '77 and the NJO is only 28 years after ANH in Star WArs galaxy time. It can be done if Lucas wants to but i also remember hearing/reading from a recent interview that Lucas wants to move on to new things and is afraid that if he does that and then go back to Star Wars hes afraid that he'll die before he feels finished

Since he has stated before (rather recently, a few years back, I believe) that he considered filming the last trilogy an impossbility due to the actors aging, I had always hoped that he would release the final trilogy in book form.

I guess now he would rather just forget all about it.

I'd really like MArk hamil to make a sick cameo in the movie...like as a republic general or something...nothing huge...just enough to play a role...like commanding the starship responsible for the destruction of a SSD (If they are in epIII.....)

I believe his original scheme for the 9-film set was rather drawn-out (I've seen a brief summary somewhere but I don't recall where), and that he basically squeezed episodes 4-9 into episodes 4-6. Luke wasn't supposed to meet the Emperor until episode 9.

Anyway, it's not news that Lucas can and will change his mind about things. He's contradicted himself in the past, which is hardly surprising; he's only a human being, after all. I know we tend to treat Star Wars as a kind of weird pop theology, but that doesn't mean we have to get fundie-like and forget that the God of Star Wars is a human being who's not inerrant.

Oh, come now, we should all know from the Darkstar debates just how fluid language is. There's a difference between "I want to..." and "I intend to..." The former refers to what a person would do under ideal conditions... the latter refers to what a person IS GOING to do under actual conditions. After all, the original "nine movies" idea was being thrown around back when Lucas just finished ANH... which, need I remind you, was INTENDED to be the ONLY movie in the series (until it became wildly successful, of course).

Lucas' SW genesis is all over the place. In that same interview, he was asked what "Journal of the Willes (sp?)" was, and he said it was a bigger thing he was working on, of which SW was just a piece.

The goal here wasn't to make Lucas stick to any commitment. Six SW movies are enough, IMHO. But the guy should just come out and SAY "You know what? Six is enough. I'm not making the other three." Instead, he's stated that the whole "9 movies" thing was a fabrication or misunderstanding from a Rolling Stone article.

Yep, I've read that same report. It said 7-9 were squeezed into ep. 6. Not only was Luke not supposed to meet the Emperor until 9, but Han died in 6, Leia ended up not being Luke's sister (I believe ep. 7 was Luke's search for his sister), 2 Death Stars were being built, and I think it said that Vader did not come back to the Light Side of the Force (not sure about that one, though), and Luke killed him.

Well, whatever his plans were, it's over now. Who wants to see a geriatric Harrison Ford, an ageing Mark Hammil, a saggy-tits Carrie Fischer in another three episodes? Ugh. Not I.

Does anyone think that those three could ever be convinced to reprise their roles. I know Hamill's been fighting against his type casting as Luke forever. Carrie Fisher's been reduced to cameos. Only Harrison has had a real career.

I think that Harrison would probably say no.

Hamill MIGHT say yes as he needs money I'm sure and I think he's come to terms with the fact that he IS Luke Skywalker for a whole generation

Carrie Fisher would BEG to do it I think.
