So, now, if I pop in a CD that goes over my office PA system, or turn on the radio in a public area, they want me to pay them? WTF?

i've said it before and i'll say it again, when all of these people actually mount a legal resistance to this supposed compyright enforcement, the Music industry's own lawyers will suck them dry. They are fighting this on way to many fronts at once.

Well for the record radio pays for the songs they play (unless the companies are trying to get it played and pony up cash). The radio stations pay a liscensing fee to either ASCAP or BMI (or both) in order to perform any of the songs copyrighted in their catalog. In other words the music you listen to on the radio has already had its fees paid, you pay by listening to commercials (or at least you need to for the radio station to remain solvent).

Point...

RIAA needs to burn, and soon. They know they're dying, so they simply are trying to take as many of us with them. It's not even about money at this point, it's about them trying to fuck as many of us over as possible before they finally bite the Big One...

I love how all the bands that line up to support these RIAA-funded legal offensives are all multimillionaires who could retire and live out the rest of their life solely on what they have now.

Is this part of some plan to eliminate all music from public places so the only way to get it is through an overpriced CD? Do they think all the people in an elevator or lobby are only there to listen to the music? Why don't they ban radios while they're at it? These artists make more money in a week than most of the people who would be affected, why do they need to suck them dry of more money?

My dentist doesn't play music for the patients. Which is okay with me, I like to bring my own CD player.

The fact that this is not already a regulation over there was news to me. Here businesses must pay a fee to Teosto (the Finnish equivalent of SOCAN/RIAA) if they desire to play music for their customers (even the radio), because it is deemed to be beneficial for them that they provide a more pleasant environment for customers who are then likely to stay longer etc, and this is why it's considereda commercial, for-profit activity. Needless to say, Teosto needs some heavy-duty pruning with axes and chainsaws, they're constantly bleating about everything, and need to be shut the fuck up.

Note that this is SOCAN and not the RIAA.

I can semi-see the RIAA's stand point about businesses playing music for there customers.

After all, it can be argued that they are using it for commerical purposes.

HOWEVER
How do you classify this use? I mean really.
sure, playing music over a PA sytem or some kind does qualify for this.

BUT
What about the receptionist that just has a radio she keeps at work to listen to while she does filing and so forth?
Or the Dentist that likes to have music on in the background while working (or to muffle the crying of freaked out patients, i.e 5 year old kid in the chair for the first time thinking the dentist is going to remove it's tongue)

Or the Computer Programmer that listens to it while working cause he helps him relax and therefore concentrate?

Or the cop that listens to music on his car radio (or a portable) while on stake out?

Or, and here's the kicker: The lawyer that has music in the background has he works?

What are you going to do, force them to turn there music off? That will cost the RIAA more business. The staff at my former dental office actually purchased CD's to keep and play at the office if they enjoyed them at home. I could see this making the 'head dentist' say 'sorry ladies and gentleman, no more music in the work place', and there goes more CD sales.

I wish some lawyer in the United States would get the balls to set up a class-action lawsuit against the RIAA.

You have to admit, with all the publicity the RIAA actions are getting, even attempting a case like this would probably generate the lawyer more noriety then most State criminal trials would, and probably make his entire career.

Unforunately (or fortunately, since the RIAA can't do shit up here) I'm in Canada, so I can't start the lawsuit up.

*SIGH*

At least here you don't have to pay if it's not on the PA or otherwise specificaly provided for the customers, I think. It's not completely out of control.
