FREAKING SPYWARE

Post by Chardok »

Okay, so last night, I was cruising SDN, seeing what trouble I could get into (See extreme cold aas a weapon? Thread) And I decided to go check up on if there were any sites that had info about microwaving flies. (There aren't) I went to yahoo, typed in microwave flies <enter>
the webpage you are trying to view is unavailable...
Interesting...Yahoo down? *POP*
Something called "Shopnav" WTF?! fuck this, I'm going to Google...
w-w-w-.-g-o-o-g-l-e-.-c-o-m <enter>
ARE YOU TRYING TO GET TO GOOGLE?
You have software installed that does not allow you to access google, most likely you downloaded without knowledge this software from...blahblahblah....anyway, so at this time I'm so pissed off I can't see straight. So I run Spybot S&D.
Nothing.
Then I D/L Adaware and adaware finds.....
SLAWSEARCH-Redirected host
Like 9 references to it. So I deletes it all.
Nothing. Same thing happens.
So I go to my computer>windows>system32>etc>hosts and find no less than 3 files with google and yahoo, and MSN and ask.com references, and the Are you trying to get to google site advised me to delete these. So I did. And it FINALLY worked. I prmoptly ran both adaware and Spybot AGAIN and it appears to have worked....Has anyone else had this problem with "Redirected hosts"? I'd really like to find out who makes these programs and write the FTC about them.

Yeah, I've heard about them. You may want to make your hosts file read-only for that reason, or change the security settings on it.

KewL!

BTW CWS got on all the majot Antivirus lists as Java/ByteVerify, so don't freak if your AV picks a virus with that name off your HDD.

And please Please PLEASE get Mozilla. M$IE is simply not an option anymore...

Imagine everything you wished IE could do?

Mozilla does most of it.

Imagine everything you wished IE didn't do?

Mozilla doesn't do it.

Imagine if that was even better, faster, more controllable, more customisable, and bluer?

That's Opera.

If it's Netscape compatible, it should be automatically Mozilla compatible, since the original Mozilla was the original basis for the Netscape browser, and the later Mozilla browser was developed as an alternative to Netscape specifically.

As for IE compatibility... Firebird may be more compatible, but Mozilla is more bug-free.

And, no, pages on the web don't have to be Netscape/IE compatible only (and definitely don't have to be IE-compatible only, despite the fucktards that design their pages that way). In fact, I guarantee that if you make your own web page from scratch using nothing but plain vanilla HTML 3 tags, it'll work in over 99% of the browsers being used.

It's only when you start using the "extras" (i.e. "snazzy" stuff like Flash or Shockwave that're great for presentation, but unnecessary for the information itself; or browser-specific tags, primarily used by IE, which are nothing more than thinly-veiled attempts by Microsoft to make the public dependent on their product) that you start running into browser compatibility issues. That's why the W3C, the group behind determining universal HTML standards, is who you need to look to for developing web pages.

Hint: Opera can pretend to be MSIE or Mozilla, if a webpage is made by fuckwits and won't display properly outside of IE..

Mozilla was the basis for the abortive Netscape 5 project, later becoming the backend of Netscape 6/7. The original Mozilla was really just a mascot for Netscape and didn't have much to do with the backend.

Firebird is Mozilla with different compile options.

Screw that. Code for XHTML/CSS (or at least HTML4/CSS) and let the page devolve gracefully on older browsers.
