Dragons vs...

Post by Bastard »

A load of D&D (Advanced) dragons are flying about, about 15 of them.

They then get attacked by an A-10 Thunderbolt II which was ordered to attack them after the dragons were detected heading for its base.

The Hawg is fully loaded with missiles and a full load of ammo for the Avenger cannon.

What happens?

You get dead dragons with about a thousand depleted uranium rounds in their carcasses. If anything you're not going to hit a flying dragon with ground attack missiles, though an A-10 can carry four Sidewinders so they would take em out too.

Power Word Hold ?
What is this ? I remember PW Kill, Sleep, Silence and Stun...
But even so, You can not used PW spells against objects (and i doubt that a PW Kill could affect a big dragon, in reference to early topic).
That depends the age of the dragons but even average wyrms can won with a trick "invisibility" and then attack the planes...

aren't most D&D dragons the size of modern aircraft, I prefer to use Krynnish dragons as I can easily find info on them, they range from 30 to 50 feet in most cases so I don't know how they would fare facing aircraft.

and Alyrium good to see you back 8)

With a max of four Winders and 940 30mm rounds, I dont think the A-10 has enough ammo to win. If the Dragons where slow enough Mavericks or rockets might work against them, but I doubt it.

However I declare this battle takes place over NATO Central front, in 1985. The Dragons, minus eight of there number fly up to 10,000 feet. At that point about 1000 different radars acquire them. The Dragons are reduced to pulp by hundreds of SAM hits. .

Some people still making the same mistake. D&D Dragons are spellcasters. Spells that allow them to be invisible, teleport, Charm the humans (not to say that the vision of a dragon cause fear in humans), polymorph, protect against Missiles. All the firepower in the world would not help much if the dragon is already over or at your side. If the dragon control the humans behind the machines.
Its not like you are fighting just a huge breathing fire beast.

Nonono, you need to place them inbound over the North Pole towards North America in the early 1960s, where SAGE will start throwing hordes of nuclear AAMs and SAMs towards them

Depends on the dragon type

Dumb Dragons like White Dragons - A10 wins.
Typical Red/Blue/Green Dragons - depends on the spells of the dragons
Highly Intelligent Dragon Gold/Silver - dragons win
Dragonkings(Darksun) - These can easily beat all earth forces combined.

I doubt that.

I'll admit I don't know much about them, but I'd bet they couldn't do much of anything about someone just flinging a NUKE in their general vicinity.

Dragonkings are actually some of the most powerful non-godlike characters ever in D&D world. They are usually over 20th level in 3 classes, fighter, Psionics and Wizard. Any wizard or psionic over 20th level in D&d world can avoid a Nuke in many ways, either by teleportation, plane shifts or simple by avoiding the nuke to be sent or making it impossible to be sent (aka, they can just go inside a place where no governament would nuke or just control those who will nuke). Its very unlikely they are going to be hit by a nuke in first place to worry about.

its open to arguement...some dragons can be invisible, use other spells that allow illusion and non-detection or teleport away or polymorph

That nuke will end up hitting something important in the offending country.
e.g. the nuke would explode inside of NORAD if the US was the offending
country. Then they would fire every nuke available at other important
targets in the US.

The only way to accurately know whether an obscure and vague magickal-being would beat a technological, scientifically-measurable in every aspect would be to put them against each other. Since "hit points" isn't even an accurate measure of endurance (or a measure of _anything_, anyway), there's no way to figure it out with numbers alone.

-Does D&D invisibility work against high-tech imaging systems? Nobody knows.
-Is a dragon skin strong enough to resist bulelts? Can't tell.
-Can you HOLD an airplane? Does HOLD actually make everything in it NOT HELD? (can I hold your internal organs but not your skin? does HOLD work on non-living things?)
-Can you cast CHARM against somebody in a airtight, fully sealed environment? How can we know, if there aren't such things in a D&D setting.
-Does a dragon outmaneouver a slow plane or vice-versa? Can a dragon do 500 km/h or only about 100 or 60? Will a dragon even have time to cast a spell on an enemy that is withing range for a second or two at a time?

Unless you make the comparison using one of those mixed-genre RPGs like Rifts (*cough* *cough* *puke*) there's really no basis for comparison.
