Republicans or Democrats?

Post by Joe »

One thing I've noticed about this board is that there aren't many strict party loyalists hanging around here. Not that this is a bad thing, but...

If you were forced to choose between the two parties, which would you choose? For the sake of discussion, pick the party that you like the best. No other options; you can only pick one or the other. Which is the lesser evil? Non-American input welcome as well, obviously.

I can't chose a party that's the lesser evil. Both are so filled with overly dogmatic shitheads that strict party voting for either party strike me as a bad idea. Both, if their promises were put into action fully, would totally ruin this country.

I'm in the same boat as you. But this is just for the sake of argument, I'm not asking you to commit yourself to one party or the other.

I'm picking Democrat. Why, I shall find out. That, and my family's Jewish and quite liberal, so Christian Conservativism's kind of a turnoff for us.

Wouldn't the answer to this question change over time? As of this very moment, I would pick the Democrats because the Republicans have shown tragic disrespect for the American people (sending their sons and daughters off to war for what turned out to be totally fraudulent reasons, using Sept 11 as an excuse to pass federal laws which represent a wishlist for the FBI but which would not have prevented Sept 11, tearing down the wall between church and state, etc). But who knows what might be the case 10 years from now?

Or you could just look at the past. 50 years ago the Democrats were the South and the Republicans were pro-poor. Look at what LBJ's stance on Civil Rights did.

For the simple fact that you gave no choice in the matter, Democrat. There's nothing to choose between the two, they go where their financial backers go, and it's often difficult to discern a difference between them.

It really depends. The Democrats famously spend assloads of money on increasing amounts of social programs, but they don't traditionally want to regulate the personal lives and moral choices of the populace. The Republicans advocate tax cuts and spending cuts on the Democrats' social programs with increased military spending, but they have very close ties with the Christian right. So take your pick, or become a Libertarian. :)

Probably have to go with republican, simply because the Democratic party is so filled with ultra-liberal leftists. Not to say that the Republican party doesn't have it's share of ultra-conservative rightists, but, well, the lesser of two evils...

Actually, the days of the fiscally conservative Republican seem to be over. As if they ever really existed in the first place.

Republican, though you're hard pressed to tell a New Jersey Republican from a New Jersey Democrat. The the last administration, which was Republican, spent us into a nine-digit hole, and the current administration, which is Democratic, seems determined to take the difference out of the taxpayer's hide.

Ditto in Illinois. Ryan left a $2 billion for his legacy, and I barely skated through the kick-in-the-balls that was my school's tuition raise for incoming freshmen.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

At least the Democrats admit that they're going to raise taxes and/or increase spending.

As of right now, it is the Republicans that piss me off more, so I had to vote against them. In time, this may and probably will change.

Democrats, although I hardly think they are guilty of sin. Still, I thought Clinton did a tremendous job given the problems during his presidency and I also liked Gore's politics quite a bit, although he isn't the statesman that Clinton was.

My real problem with the Republicans at the moment is that there are too many conflicts of interest with them and their administration. One could easily make the case that many of Bush's biggest blunders during his tenure is his obsession with oil. Iraq, pulling out of Kyoto, halting funding/incentives for alternative fuels, drilling in Alaska, lowering coal power emissions standards, etc. I also think that the repeal of the estate tax as well as other huge tax breaks for the wealthy are tragic mistakes.

The worst part about the Republicans though is that they take all the credit for stuff that they didn't do, and none of the blame for mistakes they've made. Bush's tax cut turned what might have been a fairly major recession, into one of the worst periods of economic depression since the crash of 1929. Bush had the gall to say that his tax cut was actually HELPING America instead of hurting it. If he had gone on TV and said "I'm sorry, we fucked up" I would have said, okay and let's move on. Sheesh!

Let's not even go into the mistakes of invading Iraq and just today pointing out that it was a good thing because the world is safer without a regime that supports terrorism. Jesus H. Christ George, where the hell do you think they got all their money and guns from in the first place?

Anyway, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Democrat, I guess. I really dislike both parties right now, but I lean left on enough issues that I'm a leftist liberal socialist pinko-commie pig to conservatives no matter what I do.

I consider myself a financial conservative and a social liberal. Since neither party is fiscally conservative right now, that leaves me with the social issues. That leaves me with the Democratic Party.
