Hey IB, I just killed another ant that was crawling on me. Am I crazy for doing that too? There's plenty of ants that crawl on my desk that I kill. I must be crazy for killing all of those ants! I should be huggling and cuddling them instead, right?

Fucking hell, woman, it's an ant. Ant it was crawling on my damned desk. I was bored and I had cologne and I just remembered that ant's have no ability to stop their air intake, so I sprayed it with cologne to kill it.

Gimme a break, if you're saying that I'm fucked up for killing a single ant no more the 1mm long

then I'd hate to see what you do around people who have fly swatters.. or bug zappers.. or bug spray.. or mouse traps..

Since size was very closely linked with how much mental capacity a thing has, and since mental capacity is the entire basis of how people judge whether or not killing something is bad? Ant's don't have feelings or even consciousness, they have the intelligence of a PC. Do you feel bad when you shut your PC off, IB?

Hello? Ant's kind of are pests, IB..

For food.

You should know that its irrelevant what the purpose is, killing is killing is killing.

There is a difference between removing household pests and killing for food and torturing for fun!

Considering that it WAS a household pest, and that I WAS removing it, you don't really have much of an arguement. And it's really hard to actually torture something that doesn't have enough mental capacity to perceive pain.

Killing and torturing animals for fun is sick. It is often responsible for violent behaviour at a later date. I recall the guy who tortured Cats for fun and later was arrested for raping his sister. Pretty disgusting but true.

It's a matter of having dimished empathy or some psycho-babble like that. Basically it can be an indicator that the person has serious problems relating to any one else and regards them as things. It usually doesn't progress beyond animals because the person can intellectually recognise the difference between humans and other animals. Some times they don't...

ahahaha. Research and education my ass. What is it research for? Discovering the toleranecs of insects to microwave radiation? What purpose does that serve, other then satisfying your own curiosity? None, unless you plan on building a microwave gun to kill insects. All I did was kill an ant that was crawling on my desk by poisoning/suffocating it. I did it for a very practical reason, not to cause suffering.

I'm not decrying empather as psychobabble. I was talking about the explanation behind way some people torture animals basically boiling down to psychobabble to say that the person is just fucked up.

And why would I kill insects other then to get rid of them? Sadistic pleasure? They're insects, they don't have the mental capacity to be tortured. But if you're that adamant, then again I suggest you yell at the people in the Nuking A Fly thread. Research nothing, they wanted to kill flies because they wanted to see how long it took them to die. Thats still deriving pleasure (as intellectual satisfaction) from the death of the fly. Brings up an interesting morality question. Vegetarians do not eat meat because they abhor the killing of animals, but billions of insects probably died due to pesticide use on the crops that make up most of their diets, Is the life of a fly worth more than that of a cow?

Put the question in a new focus, when harvesting a field of grain thousands upon thousands of field animals including mice, snakes, and pheasants die. On that same land a few hundred cows would have been raised for slaughter and given far more humane deaths than the ground up bone crushing body shredding that these field animals go through. Does the life of one cow exceed that one one hundred or even one thousand mice?

I personally feel that killing animals at my own discretion works best. The ones I love are treated accordingly, and the ones I despise are either poisoned or grilled medium well.
