Yippee. About a week ago, I got a call from my District Manager, and he said, "I want to talk about your performance." I got a little nervous, even though I knew I hadn't done anything wrong; you know how it is.
Anyways, he follows that up with: "It's exceptional." He then went on to say that he wants me to move up to Assistant Manager (right now I'm a Shift Leader).
Today I drove out to a store in Mountain View (the location isn't important to you guys, but there it is anyways) to meet the Regional Director. The Regional Director is a man of about forty-five who doesn't like movies, but loves managing people. He was busy telling people where to move stuff in the store, because he didn't like how it was set up. He took me into the office, asked my name (I replied, "Bobby Treder"), how long I'd been with the company ("One year and three months"), how long I'd been a Shift Leader ("Three months"), whether or not I thought I was ready to be an Assistant Director ("Yes"), and then he told me about how working is really great and he likes managing people. Then the District Manager gave me a sheet to sign saying that Hollywood Entertainment Corporation could perform any number of background checks on me, and I signed it. He then told me which store I'd be transferring to, and that he was glad I came. Then I drove home.

So anyhow, this kicks ass, because I'll be making more money. Starting pay for Assistant Director is $11.68/hr, which isn't too much, but considering that I'm at $8.40/hr now, it's quite a bit more to me. I'll be asking for $12.50/hr, and I'm going to see if I can stop the negotiations at $12, though I know they'll want me to take the $11.68. We'll see about that.
The only thing that sucks is that I'm going to a new store, and I really like the people at the store I'm at now. Plus, it's closer, and as a Shift Leader, I don't need as many hours/week. But, as they say, "All good things must end...autumn leaves must fall." And besides, the money's right.

So, I thought I'd just toot my own horn for a while there. Thanks for abiding.

God dammit man, four more years till I'm out of college, then it's off to the patent office so they can pay for my law school and let me skip the patent bar...

Cool, Robert. Congratulations. You know one of these days, I should go to your store. Find your name tag, and then make monkey noises just to see how you handle it.

Best of luck asking for more money, my experience with retail is that there is no negotiating. With the business climate what it is in our valley, you cant negotiate for much in any position. However, if you get more money, good for you.

Im hoping they have a reasonable health plan and 401k for you "full timers"?

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath on the more money bit, but my current Assistant Director said I should be getting at least 12 for the store I'm going to, and anyways, it can't hurt to ask.

Oh, and there are kind of benefits for being an AD. I can take an infinitesimal amount of paid vacation, I believe. But there aren't any real benefits, like health, dental, 401k, etc. But I'm already a full-timer (as are several of our lowly cashiers); that's not really a barrier to break. It's just that I'll have extra managerial responsibilities (and hopefully I won't have to spend as much time on register).

Okay, forgive me if I nag like an adult here. If you are not going to go to college you really should think about getting a full time job with real benefits. Most parents health plans dont cover children past 18 unless they are in college then it is till age 24 or so.

I know in the past you were thinking of not going to college, have you made any decisions? You could always just take some classes over and Mission just to get a feel.
