When does suffering turn into whiny attention-whoring?

Post by Shinova »

You know how some people get emotional over something somewhat tragic that has happened and ask those around them for emotional support and all?

That's good and all, but at what point does the reason for the tragedy get frivolous enough and the crying whiny enough for it to be classified as attention-whoring rather than seeking emotional support?

Attention-whoring is the seeking of attention for its own sake, not because you have a real cause such as a tragedy.

It's impossible to know whether someone's crossed that line. People can be genuinely grief-stricken over a tragedy for months or longer.

One shouldn't have to ask for emotional support. Others should be considerate enough to offer it before they have to.

It becomes attention-whoring when they start to demand to be comforted or attempt to forcus the center of every social event to themselves.

EDIT: For some reason, I was thinking in forum terms, not day-to-day ones.

Perhaps when it becomes a recurring theme, with mention of whatever event in question popping up in several threads, or with the sufferer starting multiple threads dealing with the problem. Of course, they may simply be suffering a lot, either physically or emotionally, but keeping it confined to one thread (Venting or a new thread specifically made for the problem) is probably the best way to go.

Depends upon the person...some people honestly suffer differently, though there are usually signs when they are trying to extract more attention from a tragedy but at times one could be simply wrong.

See above, for me, personally, and not regarding anyone else, I try not to post personal stuff on here if I can avoid it, mainly because this isnt the place to post it (for me), either due to a face in the crowd mentality or a feeling that it would be attention seeking and all that. If you ever see me post some bad news or some stressed out crap, then I'm probably really really low and just need a place to vent, if it was anything really serious, then I'm not entirely sure whether I'd post it on here or not.
