Tis in my favorite movie list. I noticed recentely that there is a video game out based on Army of Darkness.... Not quite sure if I want to check it out, don't want to have it suck and ruin the movie for me.
According to TechTV's X-Play, it's very repetitive and while it has some wicked tricks with the chainsaw and boomstick, it gets boring.

Hmmm, must have missed that episode. Have to catch Morgan, er I mean the game on a rerun then.

Bah, i've only seem Evil Dead 2. I am tempted to buy Evil Dead on DVD tough as at my (former) local Game they had a special edition in a package that was made to lok like the book of the dead.

The best thing about the films is that each one is so different from the next.

The original Evil Dead was a balls-to-the-wall splatter film. Its goal was to be the king of splatter, and in that i think it was definitly successful. Raimi was smart to pace the film slowly and build up the tension; the film actually works as a low-budget supernatural thriller up until the girl gets raped by the tree (at which point any regard for all that is sane goes out the window). I saw Evil Dead after seeing EDII (a rather tame R-rated film) and after surviving through all of George Romero and Lucio Fulci's zombie flicks and Evil Dead still managed to shock me. By the end of the film, its become so over the top that you realize that the film was really a cleverly disguised comedy.

Evil Dead II is the bridge between the original low-budget horror film and the fantasy-comedy that is AOD. It has probably the best replay value--theres tons of laughs and ouright slapstick (perhaps not as goofy as AOD but still equally hilarious), some FX action scenes that have a charming camp to them and it still manages to pack in plenty of gore and violence...nowhere near the outrageous level of the original, being an R-rated film, but close enough to satisfy gore-hounds. Any film showing a man cutting off his possessed hand with a chainsaw, attatching said blade to the stump and using it to dismember undead villains is a-okay in my book.

Army Of Darkness is the odd-man-out of the trilogy. Its a great film, a true camp classic, but it is still my least favourite of the three. The Evil Dead series was a comedy-peppered gorefest and here we have a film that is the complete opposite; its only connection to the tone of the originals is Ash and his chainsaw. Instead of horror-comedy we get a fantasy comedy set in the Middle Ages, and the series' overthetop violence is now replaced with clean slapstick. How AOD got Rated R in the US, i'll never know, it was tailored to the PG-13 standards (censor boards are notoriously prejudiced against horror directors). However, Raimi took a brave step in changing the essence of the film and he takes it the whole nine yards. Everything about this film is blown completly out of preportion into the level of a living comic-book, from Bruce Campbells over-the-top performance (who'd a thought he could top himself from EDII?) to the sheer manic brilliance of the end battle. If the Three Stooges ever invaded a genre film it would probably be AOD.
As a side note, i'd recommend everyone seeing the much-superior Directors Cut. Instead of the rather boring S Mart ending we have one that falls more in line with the continuity of the Evil Dead series and gives it more of a consistancy. Basically it involves Ash accidentally becoming trapped in the apocalypse. Much improved. They also extended the end battle and added a few more scenes.

Thats the one i got. 25 quid in WH Smith. I've not got to see AoD yet however. Thats for Saturday Night over in my mate Dougs on his home cinema set up. Watching the 1st 2 movied I see a lot of what influenced Doom and Duke Nukem.

Hey, I dunno if any of the rest of you have heard about this or not, but Bruce Campbell is supposed to be in a new movie...I think it comes out in 2004? He stars as Elvis, and battles zombies again. I've heard it's pretty damn good.

That ending does fit better and make more sense but I like the North American release with the S-Mart ending the best.

For one I love the S-Mart ending with the never ending ammo supply for his rifle. Plus the evil chick bouncing off of the trampoline.

This version also has the line, "Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun".

The director's version instead says, "I'm not that good".

There's more scenes in the director's version that are cool but I just have to have the "gun" line and the S-Mart ending.

He's such a loser and he's still kicking ass.

We had Evil Dead II at the theater I worked at back when it came out. I had a private screening for my friends and myself, and this one guy who invited himself decided it was The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and kept trying to come up with clever lines to yell at the screen.

yup. Its even fitting for AOD itself--Ash never wins, the entire film is him getting his ass kicked and then just when he thinks he can escape he gets caught once again. Ash never wins--thats the rule of the trilogy.

As a side note, i once made my own edit of the Evil Dead Trilogy, splicing together all three films so its one continuous 4 1/2 hour film. Each movie picks up where the last leaves off.

ED1 you can watch in its entirety. When the invisible EvilDead-camera rams into Ash's face at the films end, you splice in Evil Dead II--you have to skip the first ten minutes, as it just recaps/remakes the previous film (it should start where Evil Dead ended, with the camera ramming Ash); you have to start it in the spot where the original left off, with the camera hitting Ash. Here as it continues it sends him flying through the woods, and of course we see what happens to him. As soon as Ash is transported to the Middle Ages, AOD starts--the shot of the car and him hitting the ground is where Army of Darkness begins. The film should end with the apocalypse ending.
Its a great way to watch the whole story, if you can manage to spare a whole afternoon or night. One thing that really works when you watch it this way is the comedy. Evil Dead starts off dead serious but soon descends into outrageous over the top splatter that is really cleverly disguised comedy. As we get to EDII, mild slapstick is introduced and the comedy gets layered on thicker and thicker as the film continues. By the time Ash is in the Middle Ages, the story has become a campy slapstick fantasy film. Its an interesting progression when the film continues uninterupted.

I like to think that both endings actually happened. Yeah, it doesn't make much sense, but if I pick one I always miss the other ending more...
