Allergies anyone?
Yes, I did a search on this, and came up with nothing.
So.. what are you allergic to?
For me-
-Dog dander (affects me esp. with puppies and short-haired dogs)
-Freshly cut grass
-Juniper
-Hibiscus
-Gold
-Nickel (read: white gold)
-Certain types of latex (thankfully, not what they make condoms out of)

verilon: A question, if you please. Are you living in a particularly clean household and, regardless of that answer, did your parents always keep a very hygienic living environment?
I'm curious as I have constantly come across theories as to why allergies are so common amongst modern Westerners and those from developed countries which typically argue that due to our superior cleanliness in this day and age, our immune systems get "bored" and try to make threats out of everyday particles and substances.
To answer your question, I don't have any allergies, maybe because I was brought up in a pig sty.![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

i didn't have any allergies until a few weeks ago, at which point i seem to have become intolerant to lactose.
But i have yet to go to the doctors about it, so i can't be sure

It doesn't matter where I am, as per the dogs. They give me instant sinus migraines if I'm around more than one that sheds.
And no, it wasn't always the cleanest place (probably why I only get sick but once a year).

Hmm, no worries. I'd need to do some major research to show the correlation anyway, but it seems ironic that we're so hygienic now that it's affecting our children's health.verilon wrote:In regards to what?Admiral Valdemar wrote:verilon: A question, if you please. I'm not sure if they've done detailed studies of seafood, dog, latex, peanut, etc, allergies in Africa and remote parts of Asia. I wouldn't be apt to jump to the 'sounds-right' conclusion that people in these places have fewer allergies to these substances.Admiral Valdemar wrote: I'm curious as I have constantly come across theories as to why allergies are so common amongst modern Westerners and those from developed countries which typically argue that due to our superior cleanliness in this day and age, our immune systems get "bored" and try to make threats out of everyday particles and substances.
It may be possible that in these less developed areas, they're just not ever eating stuff that they're allergic too. People in western/developed areas eat a wide variety of food from all over the world. Also, if a kid eats something and dies, they're not going to do an autopsy.
I may be wrong on this (I haven't read up on allergies as I don't have them); that's just my initial reaction.

Also, IMO, some of the most recent allergies are caused by GMOs...

Ya, I think there would be some effect. I'm not sure if its because kids that would normally die in 3rd world countries can live a normal life here (ie. kids with poor immune system are surviving to adult life), or if its because we're not 'toughening' our immune system enough. *shrug*Admiral Valdemar wrote: Hmm, no worries. I'm allergic to fucking something. I don't know what though. I will regularly seemingly spontaneously develop a running nose, snezing, itchy eyes, watering eyes. No clue what it's from, though. As a matter of fact, it was so bad at one point I was hopelessly addicted to Afrin in order to breathe. Afrin addiction sucks balls.

Go to your GP and ask if you can have an allergy test, that'd at least narrow down the possibilities.

No one knows, they all combust as soon as they go outside.Chardok wrote:No WAY! Allergic to sunlight? Elaboration? What is the mechanism of this allergy?

Seriously, porphyria is far too rare to be what you have and if you were allergic to water you'd be dead as soon as you drank anything remotely water based like fruit cordial.

There is no way someone can be allergic to water, seeing as we're 75 percent of the stuff...
Not to mention that there's nothing in water to be allergic to...

As far a si know the only thing i'm allergic to is Darkstars website. For some reason when i read it my eyes start to itch and i get a headache, it's quite strange that no other web site does this. ![Confused :?](./images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)

Aquagenic urticaria is a condition whereby the skin produces rashes and hives from shower, rain and even perspiration moisture. The mechanism for the allergy is poorly understood even at this time, but there is a girl in the UK with it who has to avoid any and all water sources on the skin. She has to have fruit juice mixed with milk to avoid the water content from contaminating her skin.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:There is no way someone can be allergic to water, seeing as we're 75 percent of the stuff...

Nature is like that, or life should I say. I remember it only from a news story a few years ago. The girl must be in her teens now, but she wears what is essentially a macintosh for going outside, specially designer for her. It must be an awful condition as there's no known anti-histamine or other therapy to counter the effects (studies were done on a Vietnam man years back).Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Not that I don't believe you, but that is just too bizarre to believe.
