Trekkies didn't create it, it was created for the Third ST movie by a Dr. Marc Okrand. It's a viable language all its own.
I thought that while it had been semi-created for the movie, it was actually fans who fleshed out the language and given it rules and such.

Don't they say that 99% of everyday speech involves less than a hundred words? It's probably not that difficult to invent a language for the purpose of a sci-fi show.

They've done Shakespeare in Klingon, Mike.
They've also done Shakespeare in plain English, using normal vocabulary.

Come now, Shakespeare isn't exactly everyday speech.

I guess I would have to see one of the plain-English Shakespeare translations in order to see how much vocabulary is really necessary.

More like 'evolved'.

The difference is that English, the so-called "Romance' languages like Italian, and the Slavic languages are still evolving, adding words and phrases all the time. The 'Invented Languages' like Quenya are static, for the most part.

I own a copy of 'Hamlet - in Klingon'.

I had to get it for English class, and this one was less than half the price of the regular version. (It comes with both the Klingon and original versions.)

Reading in class just became more interesting...

I'd like to see a comparison of scenes in English and Klingon. It would be interesting to see how close the Klingon version kept to the intent and timing of the words.

After all, Shakespear was notorious for puns and jokes hidden within, some of which modern audiences miss.
