Earth's Schwarzschild radius is more than a meter, dumb-ass. It would collapse into a black hole. Furthermore, the magnitude of gravity has nothing to do with the fact that it's an example of a real-life force field and not those stupid glowy things in Star Trek.Sriad wrote:Yea, gravity. Whoop. And what does it take to produce the ~700 N of force holding my ass to my chair? Nothing much, only 5.97 × 10^24 kilograms of dirt. It should be trivial to reduce that to a disk about a meter across.
Since when? What part do force fields play in your theory, which you've admitted is completely invalid? And no, saying, "Well I'm sure there'd be some use for them" doesn't count as a good answer.Superscience is explicit in my theory (fine, since I've admited that on-screen evidence doesn't support it[or flat out contridicts it; I didn't remember any specific speed for the disk when I made the OP], my delusion. ) but it is implicit in any theory that suggests the use of force fields.
By the way, saying that on screen evidence doesn't contradict or support your theory doesn't make it credible.
Who said anything about gravity being the force generating the field? It could easily be an EM field as well. Would you just admit that you've lost already?Edit: Not to mention that Gravity produces a field towards the generator. To get effects like those on screen we'd need to be using exotic matter.

Already calced it, Durandal. 9 meters.
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.
Do you really think...?
Okay, look. I was wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. I admitted this a long time back, and everything I've posted since then has been completely superlative. In fact, if you want you can stop reading this post now, I don't magically prove anything. At this point I'm just trying to clarify what my (wrong) position originally was.

Perhaps I didn't make this clear; my (defunct) theory didn't involve force fields in any way, the superscience is in the material the disk would have been made of, and accelerating it.Durandal wrote:Since when? On screen evidence flat out contradicts my theory! That was the original cause for my concession, which I will reproduce here:Durandal wrote:By the way, saying that on screen evidence doesn't contradict or support your theory doesn't make it credible.
Sriad wrote:Well, there's probably some way I could explain my theory around that, but in general, darn. Can't win 'em all.beyond hope wrote:I don't think the visuals would support it. I watched again this afternoon: there's a bright flash, followed by the formation of a ghostly blue spherical fireball which stops at a set distance. The fireball coalesces (sp?) into a toroid, flattens, then there's a second intense flash at the center and the fire ring expands outward.

Whereas my original (poorly timed) concession went un-noticed by all, including me.Ender wrote:No shit. A well timed concession can typically help you alot more then fighting for pages does.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Jesus, why can't he accept that he's lost?

Except that we already have canon proof that in SW, they can generate that kind of attractive or repulsive force without such large masses. It's called artificial-gravity, and you see it on all of their ships, all of the time. Open your eyes.Sriad wrote:Yea, gravity. Whoop. FORCE FIELDS EXIST IN REAL LIFE. THEY ARE NOT THOSE STUPID THINGS ON STAR TREK. I WILL GIVE SOMEONE A MILLION POINTS IF HE CAN NAME THE FORCE FIELD THAT IS HOLDING HIS ASS TO HIS CHAIR.
It is better to generate a theory using known phenomena than to just make shit up and put everything (observed and unobserved) under the same blanket definition of "superscience".Superscience is explicit in my theory (fine, since I've admited that on-screen evidence doesn't support it[or flat out contridicts it; I didn't remember any specific speed for the disk when I made the OP], my delusion. ) but it is implicit in any theory that suggests the use of force fields.
It is an indisputable canon fact that they have a method of applying long-ranged force to electrically neutral objects. Ergo, a mechanism derived from this known phenomenon makes more sense than one which requires a new phenomenon. Get it?So nyah.
Edit: Not to mention that Gravity produces a field towards the generator. To get effects like those on screen we'd need to be using exotic matter.

It occurs to me that I took the wrong approach with this; instead of trying to figure out how Star Wars people would apply Star Wars tech to make these things, I tried to figure out how I would have done it without paying much attention to existing Star Wars tech. I mean, they only use repulsors for their frickin elevators and cars...
