Ok.. so I've gone through hell, bending over backwards trying to accomodate Hasting's in hopes that I might be hired, for the past two weeks. I passed their fucking drug test. I missed only three questions on their fucking IQ test. I got the second fucking interview. I waited patiently for their call to tell me whethere I was hired over the weeked. Waited until fucking Tuesday to go talk to them to see what was up, at which point the manager said the GM didn't tell her, and that she would call the next day. Which she didn't. So today, I go to check my mail. And there's a fucking LETTER telling me I'm not hired. When they fucking say they're going to fucking call me, they better fucking call me. I am fucking pissed.

Anyone have any similar experiences?

At least you didn't get the job and were then sacked by getting a text message. That happened to 1500 at one British company a few months ago. Now that isn't normal.

I never trust job agencies or potential employers.

Do you know that out of more than 50 applications via phone, mail and e-mail I have received only 3 replies.

2 of which were a "no" during the phone call and the third was letter sent out a month later saying I hadn't been chosen.

How about this. I had an interview with a manager of an auto parts store. They were looking for a delivery driver. The guy liked my resume and the interview went fine. Flash forward two days. I get there, they show me the ropes in the warehouse. But when they showed me the car, I find that it is standard (I do not know how to drive standard. I've only driven automatics.). I tell the manager that I don't know how to drive standard. "Really?" he says, "I thought I asked to you in the interview if you knew how to drive standard?"

I reply, "No, you haven't. If you did, then I would have said no and would not have quit my last job."

"But I swear I asked you if you knew how to drive standard. Well since I only have standard tranny cars, I guess I'll have to let you go."

A month later, I find that the motherfucker has a delivery driver with a car with an automatic tranny.

Later when I went to check on any job openings online, I found the same job opening but this time they mention "must be able to drive standard".

Job rejections are nothing. It is very routine for them to send out rejections via mail or e-mail. I mean, from the company's point of view, it is much more straightforward to have HR send a canned form-letter than to have someone contact the person directly and risk possible harassment. You just learn to get over it and keep looking.

And of course the GM didn't tell the local manager anything, they generally only do that when they actually start the process of bringing someone onboard. The manager probably didn't know any better, so give her a break.

What position were you applying for? It's unusual for Hollywood Entertainment Corporation to notify someone by mail that they aren't hired, at least for the in-store positions. As a matter of fact, usually you aren't notified at all about not being hired, unless you've already had the interview. If you've had the interview and they don't go with you, they'll call you, because there are no form letters for that, and Store Directors are usually to lazy or busy to write anything out individually.

But then, the district you applied in may operate differently than mine.

Anyways, they have them throughout the midwest and south in the USA. I believe they're America's third-largest video rental store, but they've been having trouble posting profits, and they might specialize in the years to come towards one particular product area, rather than the broad spectrum they carry today.

It's the principle behind it. The GENERAL MANAGER said they were going to call by Sunday. They didn't. I went in on Tuesday and the HIRING MANAGER said they were going to call. WHETHER I WAS HIRED OR NOT. It was a bunch of bullshit of them waiting for me to receive the fucking letter.

True.. I'm not pissed at the people for doing their jobs.. I'm pissed because they didn't do what they said. When they tell you they're going to call to tell you you're not hired, then I expect them to call to tell me I'm not hired, not send a letter.

...Except most places that notify you via letter down here tell you they'll notify you by letter if you're not hired... Like AOL. They said they'd notify me by letter.. and shwee, I got notified by letter. Other places, like Border's send you a letter telling you you're not getting an interview. Those are always nice to get.

Oh.. as opposed to the other thirty some-odd places I've applied over the past 6 months? And some of these places I applied in different locations, as well as multiple times. And still nothing. So I'll be walking up and down the street tomorrow trying to find places that are hiring. And today would mark the third Denny's I've applied at. Yeesh.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am actually glad they even gave me an interview at all.. but it's the principle of the whole thing that irks me. Tell me you're going to let me know one way, please don't let me know another way.

As someone who has been on both sides of the table I can tell you that Mike is right, when we don't want a candidate we simply don't call. We send it offer letters for those that we intend to hire.

I've also seen people fired because they said something in the wrong tone to a senior attorney. I've gotten the call at 9:30 at night from a senior associate when a temporary paralegal walked in once and waited patiently for the guy to get off the phone. The guy was blabbing and made a rude mnotion for the paralegal to leave the office, so she just loudly dumped the stuff he wanted on his chair. I get the phone call "Frank, I think we should think of getting rid of so and so, she seems to have an attitude proble," I can read between the lines and so the next day I'm calling the agency telling them the assignment is over. There's no worse feeling in the world than firing someone.

I've been to many an interview where I was talked up and shown around and told this and that and then NOTHING. Its simply a shitty experience when you're job hunting.

BTW I don't mean to sound rude but why exactly do they hand out IQ tests to people who will eseentially be video store clerks??
