Do you excuse sexual assualt? No big deal right?
There is a marked difference between pursuing justice for the sake of justice, and for the sake of political gain.
Do I believe the allegations against Clinton were smear? No. Why? He was already in office at the time, he was going his job.
Do I believe that the alliegations against Arnold are true? I have no idea, as I do not know Arnold, nor do I know the woman that the press is claiming made these accusations.
Do I think they are smear? Given the timing, yes.
Reason: Davis and the other independants have pretty much said that they are no longer running to become Governor, but to keep Arnold from becoming governor.
So, how easy would it be for one of them to call in a favor with a media mongul, and get something like this started?
How did the newspaper in question locate these woman? It's not like they'd run a full page ad 'If you have dirt on Arnold, call us at....'
Most of the accusations are from people already in 'the business' when they say he accusted them. Okay, fine. However, they still didn't say anything about it. They are only saying something now. Had they spoken up even 4 months ago, I would not be saying smear.
Heck, AFAIK, none of them even threatened a civil suit against him.
It's about TIMING.
To give you an example, locally, in Toronto, right around the last time the Mayor was re-elected, too men popped up saying they were his illegimate children and sued him. (Incidently, the Mayor owns the Bad Boy Furniture chain). They were claiming that not having there biological father around scared them mentally, etc.
Both of them owned rather successful businesses.
TIMING.
That's my objection.
If Arnold did what they are saying he did, deal with it, but NOT in the middle of a political campaign when he appears to be winning, because it cast a huge shadow on the accusers motives, as well as the political process in general.
