Should we have an art contest?

Post by Shinova »

I just realized that I don't think we've had one on this board yet. Since there's a lot of different kinds of artists here, some 2D some 3D, we should make a theme or something and let participants use their respective resources to make their work.

Just a thought.

And what, exactly, would this involve? I'm not good at CG, and generally tend to stick to pen(cil) and paper.. Would there be different "awards" for different types of art?

Yeah, I think it's a good idea. Say... in about a month.

There should be categories for 3D (split into ships, weapons, etc.) and 2D (pencil, pen, charcoal, coloured, etc.).

There could be categories like YT said, or the theme could be something like:

Design a spaceship.

Then everyone turns in their entry at the deadline, whether it's CGI, hand-drawn, or photoshopped. Whoever's design is cooler or more original wins.

And as for award, since we can't actually "hand out" anything, the winner could decide the theme or subject of the next contest. Unless there IS something we could hand out.

That would be the inherent problem, dude.

So then a separate theme for each category? Say, medieval character for 2D, space station for 3D, etc.

Well, that's not the point.. I can't draw much scifi stuff.. I'm very limited to my mech drawings, and even then, they're not that great. However, it could also be done such that whoever did the all around best job at drawing could win in each said category, or each category (2D/3D/CG) could be subletted into different things (Fantasy art/scifi art/etc.).

This sounds like a good idea. But to be fair we would have to split it into different catagories.

Some good ones might be:

3D Sci-fi
3D people
3D buildings
3D other

2D pencil abd charcoal
2D CG
2D painting and pastels
2D other

Sounds nice, but should we leave the categories like that or dictate a subject matter for each category as well, like:

3D Sci-fi : Warship
3D people : Original alien
3D Building: skyscraper

Like that or should we just leave it open?

Again, I think leaving it open would be a better idea, because some of us (namely myself) can't draw aliens or starships. Period.

Yes, the subjects of the contests should be very vague, and the emphasis be on broad categorizations and styles, with maybe the occasional 'fantasy objects', 'people' or 'ships' for good measure. Maybe 'Photoshopped movie posters' for folks like me. :)

Making the contests too specific just alienates people. Who wants a contest where only 3 people make models of aliens?

In that case, maybe we should separate things a bit. Something like...

2D/3D Art
Photo Editing (Photoshop, etc).

Maybe the theme for the first category should be, Fantasy (a little break from the typical sci-fi). And for the photo editing category, I don't know. I'm sure you photoshoppers would have a good idea of a theme for this.

EDIT: For the photoshop category, I have one idea:

Create a movie poster, the movie being something about the California Recall Election, starring the gubernatorial candidates and Gray Davis! I'm sure there's plenty of photos of them on the net, and I suppose each of you could come up with a creative movie poster of the Recall election. :P

Of course, going *too* braodly can also be a bit difficult to deal with, as there are a lot of artists of different types out here...

Say, fantasy, scifi, abstract, etc.. Like that, rather than just 2D, 3D, Photoediting.

[EDIT] That isn't to say that photoediting shouldn't have its own categorical contest.. it should.

Also.. need to have a deadline on it. And judges.

The way some other boards do it is to have deadlines at the end of each month, making it monthly contests. As for judges, at the deadline someone just puts up a poll and puts up images of all the contestants' works and then people just come in and vote. Participants are encouraged not to vote, of course.

Sounds good. :-D

Maybe a theme for each month might be in order? Like a Halloween theme for October, for example? Or maybe along the lines of land/city/water/spacescapes for another month?

Which reminds me, this month being October and all, the general art theme should be "Halloween".

For the photo editing people, probably a Halloween theme too.

EDIT: Also, remember that the winner gets to decide the next month's topic. :)

Yeah, art contests are a fun way to promote the art boards and get people thinking/modelling/photoshopping/drawing. Monthly contest is easy enough to administer, and gives enough time to do the job without being too complex or overly boring. If it's open to everyone then you need to set a rather broad idea and let people interpret it in their own way in their own medium, not '3D guys make this' and '2D guys draw that'. Use one word or phrase as the theme and let people make what they want, when it comes to poll time people will vote for the best that sticks to the theme. Dead easy, get it started you guys!

No fucking themes, Shin!!

I for one can't draw when I'm restricted. It would also eliminate my abstract Photoshop stuff, which I'm really good at.

o_O I've seen some *very* abstract stuff that could be classified and themes.. your only limit, Spanky, is your mind. Just do what comes to you. A theme doesn't have to limit you to any one thing. Halloween can be whatever the hell you want it to be.

Yeah, I'm up for it too, but you definitely need a theme of some sort otherwise you get jokers sending in stuff they made years ago, or people just farting around making the same stuff they always make. The idea is to get people thinking and making art with their chosen tools, not simply posting their stuff occasionally to no end, it'd just be like the normal board. A little friendly rivalry pushes you a bit, and who knows you might find a new niche you really like. I'd never made a gun before, but the one I made took a lot of time and effort, was a great excersize in design thinking and came out getting a lot of praise and winning the contest. Woohoo!
