SD.NET October Art Contest

Post by Shinova »

Welcome to Stardestroyer.net's first art contest, where artists alike can gather and prove their worth!

This month's theme has been tentatively set as, "Halloween."

Make something Halloweenish, whether it'd be something with ghosts and stuff, or just an artwork with a dark atmosphery feel to it (2D, 3D, photoshop, hand-drawn, anything is allowed; but DO NOT PLAGIARIZE). All entries should be posted here (if you have WIPs, you may post them here as well). Do keep in mind that there are 56kers here, so if your pics are big, put them in links.

Since this is the first contest, I feel that we should give everyone a bit of an "adjustment" period. Therefore, the deadline shall be November 15th of this year, to give everyone some extra time.

Once the deadline is hit, all finished entries will be gathered in a voting thread with a poll. There, onlookers can vote on what they feel is the best piece. The winner will then have the privelage of deciding the next contest's theme.

Of course, this all assumes you have webspace to host your work off of. If you do not have webspace, there are plenty of members here who can host your work for you.

With that out of the way, let the contest begin! (Remember, Halloween is the theme, the deadline is November 15th. Participation is voluntary.)

EDIT: They also have to be new works, no digging up something already made in the past.

Nah. One entry per participant.

You can post the other work as a non-contest piece in the artwork forum.

Shit.

Then I feel we should reserve the right to withdraw any entry and replace it with one we feel is superior at any time.

EDIT: Either that, or I will have to be careful when I make a selection for multiple pieces.

Why don't we have it so that a person can have an entry in each of the MAJOR categories, but no multiples in those categories?

We already decided to make it broad enough so that people don't feel restricted, and having multiple categories would complicate things tens of times over.

The theme is halloween.

What I am suggested would make it less restricted, actually. Limiting it to one entry might be a bad idea. What I am suggesting is maybe allow one 2D work and oe 3D work, or whatever, but no more than one in each of those categories.

As it is right now, whether you're work is 3D or 2D, it's still considered equally as with every other entry.

Let me guess, you don't do any 3D, right? Then all you have to do is submit a 2D work and it'll be considered the same as every other.

But if 2D work being measured against 3D work seems unfair to you, then we could split the category to 2D and 3D, but then the problem comes up again when someone wants to split those categories even further and further.

Or is it cause you really really want to submit multiple works?

Anyhow.. this is the first one, so there are things to be tweaked for future ones. So I think that I'll just pretty much leave it alone for now.

But what I was getting at was this:
I don't see how 3D and 2D can be judged against each other, and therefore wouldn't be the same large category. Given two very broad categories, they can be broken down into multiple subcategories. I was suggesting that while a person could submit one 2D work (in whatever subcategory), they might also submit one 3D work (in one subcategory), but no other 2D works, and no other 3D works.

Trying to add loads of sub-categories, multiple entries and other divisions just causes major hassle when it comes to this sort of thing. If you check out other boards or art website competitions you generally find it's one entry per person per competition, and that's yer lot. I'd try and avoid splitting 2D and 3D to, although I can see where you're coming from on that one, but you shouldn't mistake realism for art. It's the overall look and feel of the final picture that matters, not how it was created or how like real life it is. I doubt there's many 3D artists kicking around here that could give a good 2D artist a run for their money in the final analysis.

Ok, this is what i'll enter,(not finished it yet) it's a vampire chick that's fighting demons and demonoid zombies in a churchyard on halloween, in a powersuit.

Whilst drawing this, i've been inspired and will make the characters of a vampire supernatural investigation team.

Image

Anyway, when i colour it in, what colour do you think i should make her costume? Either that purple that goes with vampires or black latex, not sure. Perhaps a combination?

I can guarentee that he did not. Anyway, I personally would not allow that to qualify as an entry, as it is just a simple manipulation of a pre-existing image with text added.

A lot of the people here are photoshoppers, so I'm gonna leave the decision to the majority.

i would think that Altered Images wouldbe fine as long as the author doesnt try to take credit for the image it is based on, and that originality can factor positively into the judging.

My image is a model of an Imperial Star Destroyer, the blue engine glow I added myself.

he exploding planet is a picutre of an Exploding Planet I found off google, but I did the work to make it look like a Jack O lantern.

If one of the categories is "Photoshop" then images such as Kujas or mine could fall under that category, sinc epeople primarily use photsho to alter or work on existing images anyway.

Well, I'm a photoshopper too, but I still make all my own source material when I do anything serious*. It seems like a bit of a cheat if the majority of a persons image was made by someone else. It's not like a funny message board "Don't Feed the Troll" image; this is an art contest and using someone elses artwork in a contest isn't just a bit tasteless, but it is plagarism**.

*In fact, I'm currently building my source material and in a few days time will be taking pictures of it to document my progress.

**No, Fair Use do not apply in this case. If anyone wants, I can post the Fair Use law that applies.
